Salt Kiss – Episode 17
Tristan told himself the demonstration had proved nothing. Standing still while Mark walked around him was not submission. It was controlled exposure, no different from a training exercise.
His body disagreed. The memory of Mark’s quiet praise followed him through the next day, surfacing whenever an order was given or a hand brushed too close.
Work offered little refuge. Tristan discovered that the compromised credential belonged to an employee who had resigned weeks earlier, but access logs showed it had been used after the resignation.
He reported the finding in Mark’s office. “Someone copied it or kept it active deliberately.”
“Can you contain the breach?”
“Already done.” Tristan had disabled the credential and ordered a full audit. Mark’s approval was visible before he spoke.
“Good work.”
The same two words from the private room sent an involuntary response through Tristan. He turned toward the security monitors, furious that Mark could affect him without even trying.
“Something wrong?” Mark asked.
“You know exactly what you’re doing.”
Mark came around the desk. “I praised my bodyguard for doing his job. Anything else you heard belongs to you.”
Tristan faced him. “And if I want another demonstration?” The challenge escaped before caution could restrain it.
Mark’s expression sharpened. “Then ask properly.”
The old resistance rose at once. Tristan had knelt to check wounds, take cover, and steady a rifle, but never because another man desired it. The distinction filled the office with unbearable tension.
“You want me on my knees.”
“I want you to choose.” Mark held his gaze. “Those are not the same thing.”
No drug clouded Tristan’s judgment. No restraints limited his movement. The door stood behind him, and his weapon remained at his side. Every avenue of escape was open.
Tristan lowered himself to one knee, then the other. The position sent a tremor through him—not humiliation, but the shock of placing trust where defiance had lived. Mark looked down at him and said nothing, allowing Tristan to feel the full weight of his own decision.
