Salt Kiss – Episode 18
Kneeling changed the balance of the room without taking anything from Tristan. He remained armed, capable, and free to rise. The power came from staying when every instinct insisted he should flee.
Mark stepped closer. “Tell me why you’re there.”
Tristan searched for an answer that did not sound like surrender. “Because I asked you to show me.”
“And because?”
He swallowed. “Because I want to know what it feels like when it’s my choice.”
Approval softened Mark’s face. He touched Tristan’s hair, giving him time to reject the contact. When Tristan remained still, Mark’s fingers settled with quiet possession.
“Look at me.”
Tristan obeyed. From below, Mark should have seemed threatening, yet his attention felt like shelter. No one else existed in the office; no memory demanded action.
“What color?” Mark asked.
“Green.” The answer emerged rough but certain.
Mark traced Tristan’s jaw with his thumb. The touch carried none of Dinah’s chemical urgency. Desire built slowly, inseparable from trust and the knowledge that Tristan could stop it.
“Stand.”
Tristan rose, bringing them face-to-face. Mark’s hand remained at his jaw, and the command continued to resonate through him.
“You did well,” Mark said.
“That’s it?” Tristan asked before pride could intervene.
Mark’s mouth curved. “Were you expecting a reward?”
Heat climbed Tristan’s neck, but he refused to retreat. “Maybe.”
Mark gave him one final chance to move away, then kissed him. It was controlled at first, a question disguised as certainty. Tristan answered by gripping Mark’s shirt and pulling him closer, discovering that the surrender he feared could feel dangerously like freedom.
