Salt Kiss – Episode 16
Tristan looked at Mark’s open hand until the gesture seemed more dangerous than a weapon. Taking it would not bind him, yet it would acknowledge a desire he had spent days denying.
“This is only a demonstration,” Tristan said.
“Only what you agree to.” Mark did not move closer. “You choose the limits before I choose anything else.”
Tristan placed his hand in Mark’s. The contact was warm and steady, without the force he expected. Mark led him to a private room but left the door open.
On a table lay restraints, a blindfold, and other implements Tristan refused to examine. Mark asked which objects were entirely forbidden. Naming them restored some of Tristan’s confidence.
“No drugs,” Tristan said first.
“Never.”
“No restraints.” Tristan glanced at the cuffs and remembered Dinah. “Not tonight.”
Mark accepted the boundary without argument. They agreed that the word red would stop everything, while yellow meant Tristan needed the pace reduced. The simplicity of the system appealed to the soldier in him.
“What happens if I tell you to stop without using the word?” Tristan asked.
“I stop.” Mark’s answer came immediately. “The safe word is a tool, not a loophole.”
Some tension left Tristan’s shoulders. He had expected Mark to search for weaknesses in the agreement. Instead, each condition made the room feel less like a trap.
Mark asked permission before removing Tristan’s jacket and weapon. He placed both within sight, a reminder that Tristan remained capable of leaving. Then he positioned him in the center of the room.
“Stand still,” Mark instructed.
Tristan obeyed. Mark circled him slowly, correcting the angle of his shoulders with a touch and asking him to breathe. The exercise was almost innocent, yet being watched so completely made Tristan feel exposed.
“You spend every moment preparing for impact,” Mark said. “For once, let someone else watch the door.”
Tristan closed his eyes. He listened for danger and heard only Mark’s measured footsteps. The urge to anticipate the next instruction gradually loosened.
“Good,” Mark murmured. The praise settled deeper than it had any right to. When Tristan opened his eyes, Mark stood directly before him. “That is enough for tonight.” Disappointment flashed through Tristan before he could conceal it, and Mark’s knowing smile promised the lesson was far from over.
