How to Tame a Silver Fox – Episode 33
Harper showed Chris the photograph rather than hiding it. The decision marked how far they had come from the night she concealed Bryan’s threat, yet she still expected him to forbid her from going. His jaw tightened, but he asked what she wanted to do.
“I want my mother’s evidence,” she said. “And I’m not walking into that house without a plan.” The distinction mattered. Courage no longer meant proving she needed nobody.
They studied the image with Cole’s six-digit sequence. Dust around the safe had been disturbed, but the surrounding books appeared untouched. Whoever opened it knew exactly where to look.
Christina identified the glove as one used by her father’s private security company. Sebastian might be in custody, but several employees remained loyal to Sloane. The message could have been scheduled before his arrest.
Mark regained consciousness long enough to object from his hospital bed. “Caroline wanted you outside this.” His voice was weak, but the old instinct to command remained intact.
Harper stood beside him without surrendering. “Mom is dead, your friend shot you, and my house was set on fire. I’m already inside it.”
Mark looked toward Chris, expecting support. Chris instead asked whether Caroline had ever mentioned a second compartment in the safe. The quiet refusal to overrule Harper deepened the fracture between the two men.
Mark admitted Caroline loved mechanical puzzles. If she created a hidden space, the combination alone would reveal only what she wanted an intruder to find.
Harper remembered a silver music box her mother kept in the study. Its melody had been the signal for bedtime, and Caroline often joked that every secret needed the right rhythm.
Chris arranged surveillance around the family property while keeping the approach deliberately light. Harper would enter visibly, allowing the watcher to believe she had obeyed, while his team covered the grounds beyond the cameras.
The Reeves house greeted her with stale air and covered furniture. Childhood photographs lined the hall, preserving a family that had stopped existing the day Caroline died.
Chris remained in her earpiece. His voice was the only modern thing in the silent rooms. “Still with me?”
“You’re hard to get rid of.” Harper used humor to steady herself and entered the study.
The safe stood open exactly as shown in the photograph. A folder lay inside, filled with harmless tax records meant to satisfy anyone who knew only the first code.
Harper found the music box on the shelf and wound it. As the melody played, tiny marks around the safe’s inner dial aligned with six notes rather than six numbers.
She turned the dial in time with the tune. A false panel released, revealing a small data drive and an envelope addressed in Caroline’s handwriting: For Harper, when she is old enough to choose the truth.
A floorboard creaked behind her. Harper turned, expecting the intruder who sent the message.
Instead, Evan Mercer stood in the doorway with empty hands. “If Sloane learns you found that drive, everyone you love becomes leverage.”
Harper removed her earpiece before Chris could reveal his position. “Then tell me why my mother trusted you,” she said, while Evan quietly locked the study door.
His expression filled with regret. “She didn’t trust me. She hired me to investigate Chris Collins.”
