How to Tame a Silver Fox – Episode 32

Paramedics rushed Mark into surgery while Harper stood beneath the hospital’s unforgiving lights with his blood dried across her hands. Chris remained beside her, close enough to steady her but careful not to touch without invitation. The restraint made his presence feel more intimate, not less.

Maria sat nearby with a blanket around her shoulders, answering police questions about the kidnapping. Cole had been taken for treatment under guard, while Christina gave investigators access to her father’s phone. Sebastian and Bryan were finally in custody.

None of those victories mattered as Harper stared at the words she had photographed on the nightclub desk. “What evidence could my mother have had?” she asked. “She died before the Boston fire.”

Chris’s silence warned her before he spoke. “Caroline knew Victor Sloane.” His answer opened another hidden room in the history her father had kept from her.

Before marrying Mark, Caroline had worked as an accountant for a charitable foundation connected to Sloane’s companies. She found transfers disguised as scholarships and medical grants, but the money funded the same trafficking network Evan later exposed.

“Did my father know?” Harper asked. Chris admitted Mark learned only after Caroline tried to leave the foundation. By then, Sloane had begun watching the family.

Harper remembered her mother’s death as a rain-slick highway, a closed casket, and adults who stopped talking when she entered the room. “The accident wasn’t an accident.”

“We never proved that.” Chris’s careful wording offered no comfort. He believed it, even if the evidence had disappeared.

Harper stood and walked to the window. For years she had blamed Mark for withdrawing after Caroline died, believing work mattered more than his daughter. Now his distance looked like fear wearing the mask of neglect.

That realization did not absolve him. Protection without honesty had left Harper lonely and unprepared, while men around her decided which truths she could survive.

Chris joined her at the window. “Your mother gave me something two weeks before the crash. A key.” He had returned it to Mark after the funeral because Caroline’s instructions named her husband as the second guardian.

“And neither of you thought to tell me.” Harper’s exhaustion sharpened the accusation. Chris accepted it without defending himself.

A nurse announced that Mark was stable. The bullet had missed the major artery, and he was expected to recover. Relief weakened Harper’s knees before she could conceal it.

Chris caught her by the waist. The hospital corridor disappeared for one suspended moment, leaving only the warmth of his hands and the memory of the kiss they had almost shared.

He released her slowly. “The key opened a safe in the Reeves family house. Mark said it was empty when he checked.”

Harper knew the house had remained closed since her mother’s death. She also knew Mark could overlook anything that required entering Caroline’s old study.

Maria approached with a detective, who reported that Evan had escaped through a maintenance exit before officers secured the club. No trace of Sloane appeared in the surveillance system.

Cole, however, had requested to speak with Harper. From his hospital bed, he gave her a sequence of six numbers Evan repeated whenever he mentioned Caroline.

The digits matched the date Harper’s mother had taken her on their last trip together. Harper realized the empty safe might never have been empty; Mark simply had not known the second combination.

Before she could tell Chris, her phone received a photograph of Caroline’s sealed safe standing open. A gloved hand held the contents above it, and the message beneath read: Come home alone if you want your mother’s truth.
