American Sniper: The Last Round – Episode 38

The archive facility sealed around Carl Oliver, Jane Valentine, and Victor Shaw. A warning light showed oxygen levels falling as inert fire-suppression gas entered the room. Mercer had repeated Mara’s gala tactic on a smaller scale, confident that the same familiar threat would force Carl to surrender the evidence.

Jane searched the walls for a mechanical release while Shaw tried to cancel the system from his terminal. Every command required Meridian authorization. The master index could generate that credential, but Elena held it at their mobile base several miles away.

Carl examined the ceiling nozzles and noticed one line vibrating later than the others. The building had been expanded around an older ventilation shaft that did not appear on Shaw’s digital plan. If they opened it, outside air could slow the oxygen loss long enough for Ruiz to reach them.

The shaft cover sat behind a row of military storage cabinets bolted to the floor. Jane used a display rail as a lever while Carl and Shaw pushed. Their strength moved the cabinet only inches. The oxygen alarm shifted from yellow to red.

Shaw began confessing names and account numbers into his phone, certain he would die. Jane stopped him and demanded that he push instead of surrendering. Lewis had survived five years because he refused to let Meridian define the ending. They could survive another three minutes.

The cabinet finally cleared the cover. Carl shot the rusted latch, and fresh air pulled through the narrow shaft. The opening was too small for an adult, but Jane found an inspection cable attached to the frame. It ran toward the building’s external fire panel.

She stripped the wires and crossed the alarm circuit. Every fire door in the facility released simultaneously. Ruiz’s team entered from the loading dock and shut down the gas. Mercer had escaped before they arrived, yet Shaw and the original cache were alive.

The cache confirmed Carl’s signature had been attached to the false authorization nineteen hours after he signed the incomplete form. Ruiz sent verified copies to the judge, military investigators, and several reporters. Carl finally possessed evidence strong enough to challenge the official story instead of merely surviving it.

Lewis listened to the news from the mobile base. He told Carl that innocence did not require pretending the careless signature never happened. Carl agreed. He would testify to his mistake as openly as he testified to Mercer’s fraud. Truth became useful only when it included the part that hurt.

Attention shifted to the anniversary ceremony. Shaw knew the remote rifle’s tower location but not Mercer’s chosen target. Meridian’s plan placed Carl’s ballistic signature on the ammunition, ensuring the attack would appear to be revenge by a disgraced sniper.

Chris reviewed the guest list. The president, defense secretary, and families of fallen service members would stand together on the plaza. Canceling the event might save them, but Mercer’s allies could move the attack elsewhere. Ruiz chose a controlled evacuation disguised as a weather delay while Carl’s team located the weapon.

Rachel Fisher complicated every route. As an invited champion, she could enter the secure perimeter with a competition case large enough to conceal trigger equipment. Jane volunteered to identify her among the guests because Black Widow would expect every tactical officer to watch Carl.

Carl objected only long enough to confirm Jane understood the risk. He had promised to include her rather than make choices for her. She answered that partnership did not require pretending fear was absent. It required acting without letting fear decide alone.

They returned briefly to the mobile base, where Rebecca slept beside Lewis. Jane told her daughter they had one more dangerous job before coming home. Rebecca asked which home she meant now that the range had burned. Jane realized she had been fighting for a place that might no longer exist.

Lewis heard the question and produced the original deed saved from the vault. The land remained legally Jane’s if Matthew’s fraudulent debt transfer was voided. Buildings could be replaced. A home survived as long as the people who created it chose to return.

Before leaving, Jane found Carl alone beside the equipment truck. She answered the confession he made in the tunnel. His presence had begun with duty, but her trust had become a choice as well. She was not ready to name the future, yet she wanted him inside it.

Carl touched his forehead to hers, allowing the quiet contact to carry what the mission left no time to say. Lewis watched from the doorway and deliberately turned away, though a faint smile softened his face. The moment lasted only until Ruiz announced their departure.

At the Capitol plaza, rain clouds gathered above the memorial banners. Jane entered with Chris while Carl climbed an adjacent maintenance route toward the bell tower. Elena monitored the remote rifle’s calibration signal from a service van.

Rachel appeared near the ceremonial stage wearing a white suit and the silver spider pin. She recognized Jane immediately and raised a champagne glass in greeting. No guards reacted because her credentials remained valid.

Jane moved closer while Elena searched for the trigger signal. Black Widow smiled and said the remote rifle was only the weapon Carl was meant to find. Beneath the stage, a second transmitter activated—and every security officer’s encrypted radio began broadcasting Mercer’s command to shoot the King of Guns on sight.
