The indictment reached the hospital before Chris was discharged. It accused him of assault, conspiracy, and obstruction during the years he worked near Sloane’s organization. Cross had prepared it months earlier, using real incidents stripped of the context that explained Chris’s eventual cooperation.
Chris read every charge without surprise. “Some of this happened.” He would not ask Harper to defend a version of him that had never existed.
Mark contacted attorneys, but the indictment had already been unsealed. Officers were required to take Chris into custody once the doctor released him.
Harper felt the old panic return, demanding that she find someone powerful enough to fix everything. Instead, she asked what evidence could distinguish Chris’s crimes from Cross’s alterations.
Caroline’s original testimony might prove when Chris began working against Sloane. Evan’s letter placed it in a deposit box registered to the foundation’s first scholarship recipient.
Maria identified the recipient as Dr. Lena Ortiz, now a retired professor living near campus. Caroline had hidden evidence with someone whose connection appeared charitable rather than investigative.
Harper and Mark visited Dr. Ortiz while Chris remained under guard. The professor remembered Caroline as stubborn, precise, and certain her daughter would one day finish what frightened adults could not.
She produced a sealed recording and required Harper to confirm the childhood phrase Caroline used in the letter. Harper answered with the music-box melody.
On the recording, Caroline described Chris as a former Sloane associate who had begun supplying information voluntarily. She documented three occasions when his actions prevented violence and protected witnesses.
The testimony did not erase everything he had done, but it destroyed Cross’s claim that Chris remained Sloane’s principal enforcer.
A second file contained Caroline’s private message to Mark. She warned him not to turn guilt into distance if anything happened to her.
Mark stopped the recording halfway through. Harper understood that he had violated Caroline’s last request while believing withdrawal kept their daughter safe.
“We both spent years living around the truth,” he said. “Chris and I just chose different walls.”
They delivered the testimony to the prosecutor. Several charges were suspended for review, but one assault allegation required a hearing because the alleged victim was willing to testify.
The witness was Bryan. Cross had rewritten an old nightclub confrontation as an unprovoked attack and promised Bryan immunity in exchange for supporting it.
At the hearing, Bryan portrayed Chris as violent and obsessed with controlling Harper. He expected her to remain outside the courtroom.
Harper took the witness stand and described Bryan’s threats, his grip on her wrist, and his work with Sebastian. Maria’s recording confirmed every detail.
Under questioning, Bryan admitted Cross had arranged his release before the chapel meeting. The confession exposed the agreement behind his testimony.
The judge dismissed the manipulated charge and ordered an investigation into the remaining indictment. Chris was released, but not fully cleared.
Outside the courthouse, he asked Harper a question more frightening than any hearing. “When this is over, will you go on one ordinary date with me?”
