How to Tame a Silver Fox – Episode 48

Chris’s injury required stitches and an overnight observation, a result he considered excessive until Harper threatened to ask the nurses for restraints. He obeyed with poor grace, discovering that her protective instincts could be as relentless as his.

Mark waited until the doctors left before entering the room. He had seen the kiss on the runway, and neither Harper nor Chris offered to explain it away.

“Cross is in federal custody outside his own chain of command,” Mark said. “The records from the case confirm Caroline’s evidence. Sloane and Sebastian will remain detained pending trial.”

The announcement closed the danger that had shaped their lives, but it did not repair the relationships damaged along the way. Evan still faced charges for shooting Mark, and Cole had not decided whether forgiveness was possible.

Mark looked at Chris. “You took a bullet because you ignored the police line.”

“Harper had him where she wanted him,” Chris admitted. “I moved too early.”

Harper appreciated the honesty. The old Chris would have called the wound unavoidable rather than acknowledge that fear had disrupted her plan.

Mark noticed the change as well. “You trust her more than I do.”

“I’m learning to.” Chris did not claim perfection. The answer made the effort visible.

Mark turned to Harper. He apologized for using protection to avoid the harder work of knowing his daughter. The words did not recover lost years, but they opened a door he had kept closed.

Harper accepted the apology without pretending the hurt had vanished. She wanted regular calls, honest answers, and visits that did not require a crisis.

“You’re giving me rules?” Mark asked.

“They run in the family.” Harper’s smile eased the tension enough for Chris to laugh, then regret it when the movement pulled at his stitches.

Mark approached the bed. “I still hate this.” He gestured between Chris and Harper. “The age difference, the history, all of it.”

“Noted,” Harper replied.

Her father continued before she could become defensive. “But hating it isn’t the same as owning the decision.”

Chris met his oldest friend’s eyes. No blessing passed between them, only a fragile agreement not to turn Harper into territory they could fight over.

Maria arrived with balloons, Christina, and Cole, transforming the private room into the smallest possible victory party. For once, Harper stood among people who had come for her rather than her house or her father’s money.

Cole carried a letter Evan had written before surrendering to police. It contained the location of Caroline’s missing original testimony.

The final page included a warning: Sloane’s network had purchased one last safeguard—a sealed criminal indictment naming Chris Collins as its principal enforcer.
