Preparation transformed the Lyonesse into a command center. Floor plans of Vale’s compound covered Mark’s office, replacing the instruments and contracts that had once intimidated Tristan.
Isolde studied her role with unnerving calm. She would present herself as a Laurence heir seeking independent control of the family’s intelligence assets.
Mark would arrive separately, allowing Vale to believe the engagement had fractured and the old strategy of division had succeeded.
Tristan objected to every point that left either of them beyond his reach.
“You cannot cover two rooms at once,” Mark said.
“Then neither of you enters a room I cannot cover.”
Isolde folded the plan. “We agreed not to confuse protection with control.”
The reminder forced Tristan to confront his own fear. He had condemned Mark for using control as armor while doing the same through security protocols.
They revised the plan together. Each would wear a tracker, share a common extraction signal, and retain the right to abort without debate.
After Isolde left for a final briefing, Mark remained with Tristan.
“If the operation fails, get her out first,” Mark said.
“No.”
“Tristan—”
“I will not accept another version of the choice Vale demanded.” Tristan stepped closer. “All three of us leave, or the plan changes.”
Mark touched the collar Tristan wore beneath his shirt, a private symbol invisible to the world. “Still giving me orders?”
“In matters of survival.”
“And afterward?”
Tristan covered Mark’s hand. “Afterward, I choose when to kneel.” Their kiss carried no goodbye, only a promise that the future would be decided by those who survived to claim it.
