The Quarterback’s First Love – Episode 42
Maddie showed Cameron the threat before fear could persuade her to hide it. His expression hardened at the claim that he helped Linda, but he did not demand immediate belief.
“Ask me anything,” he said. Their rule had survived kidnappings and scandal; it could survive an accusation only if neither retreated into silence.
Brett sent a second message containing a photograph of Cameron speaking with Linda outside the childhood hospital. The timestamp came from two months after Maddie’s accident.
Cameron recognized the day. After finding Maddie unable to remember him, he met Linda in the parking lot and begged to remain nearby. The photograph captured Linda taking his shoulders while he cried.
“She told me seeing me caused your panic,” he explained. “She made me promise not to return until doctors approved it.” No approval ever came because Linda controlled the communication.
Maddie studied the image. A frightened ten-year-old appeared, not a conspirator. Brett relied on the audience mistaking chronology for guilt.
They forwarded the threat to police. An investigator advised them not to respond while officers sought a warrant for Brett’s devices.
Brett interpreted silence as weakness. He scheduled a livestream promising evidence that Central’s star quarterback built his romance on medical manipulation.
Veronica contacted Maddie privately. She offered to stop Brett in exchange for Maddie withdrawing testimony about Campus Clash. “You created this mess with him,” Maddie replied. “You can tell the truth without purchasing immunity.”
Veronica ended the call, furious that bargaining power had vanished. Yet Brett’s threat endangered her too; the records could expose how she and Linda obtained them.
Cameron prepared a statement for the livestream. Maddie rejected any version that centered his innocence while revealing more of her childhood. “My privacy is not the price of defending you.”
He rewrote it. The final statement acknowledged meeting Linda after the accident, denied participating in treatment decisions, and refused to discuss Maddie’s confidential care.
Minutes before Brett went live, police arrived at his apartment. He escaped through a rear stairwell with his phone and copies of the files.
He began broadcasting from a moving car. Thousands joined as he accused Cameron of stalking a memory-impaired woman and manufacturing their reunion.
Then Veronica entered the stream from her own account. She revealed that Brett threatened her and had stolen the records from Linda’s attorney.
Brett called her a liar. Veronica uploaded messages in which he planned the leak and promised to make Maddie “too broken for anyone to want.”
Public opinion shifted in real time. Brett ended the broadcast, but screen recordings spread faster than his accusations.
Police located his abandoned car near the stadium. His phone remained on the seat, wiped of recent data. Brett himself was gone.
Cameron asked Maddie to stay home until he was found. She agreed to reasonable precautions but refused confinement. The next day’s housing initiative launch would proceed.
As she entered the student center for the event, the lights failed. Emergency doors locked, and Brett’s voice came through the dark auditorium: “You should have withdrawn the complaint.”
