The Quarterback’s First Love – Episode 40
Victory music thundered through the stadium while the officer explained the accusation. Linda claimed the money used for the orphanage trust had been transferred after Maddie manipulated Cameron’s account. The complaint demanded immediate questioning.
Cameron reached them and asked whether Maddie was under arrest. The officer said no, but the timing was unmistakable: Linda had prepared a second attack in case the eligibility complaint failed.
Maddie refused to flee the stadium. She accompanied the officer to a private room with her attorney and Cameron present. Fear remained, but evidence had become a language she knew how to use.
Bank records showed Cameron authorized every payment. His agent and the trust attorney confirmed the transaction. Maddie had no access to his private account and received no personal funds.
Linda’s accusation collapsed within an hour, yet reporters had already received anonymous tips. Headlines questioned whether the former homeless cheerleader had targeted a wealthy athlete.
Cameron wanted to address the press immediately. Maddie asked him to wait until she could speak beside him rather than from behind him. The distinction mattered.
At the postgame conference, she presented the trust documents and described the attempted payoff. She did not reveal confidential medical details, but she named Linda’s pattern of using money to control relationships.
Cameron confirmed he alone funded the purchase and repairs. “Maddie did not take a million dollars from me. She helped ensure it became something no individual could own.”
The NFL scout remained for the conference. Far from damaging Cameron’s prospects, the calm response demonstrated judgment under pressure. He requested a meeting after the season rather than withdrawing interest.
Police added the false report to their investigation of Linda. Her attorney advised silence, but she issued a statement portraying herself as a frightened mother deceived by outsiders.
Roy Carter finally returned to the country. He met Cameron privately and admitted Linda had controlled adoption records and finances without his full knowledge. Cameron asked how often ignorance had been a convenient choice.
Roy had no adequate answer. He offered access to family documents and agreed to cooperate with investigators. Reconciliation remained distant, but accountability had begun.
Veronica learned Linda’s protection was weakening. The university reinstated disciplinary proceedings over Campus Clash, and her father refused to risk further business damage by intervening.
Brett faced permanent removal from the team after the equipment switch. Without football or Veronica, he directed his anger toward the person he still blamed for everything: Maddie.
At the apartment, Maddie and Cameron watched the false headlines update into corrections. Retractions could not erase the insults beneath them, but they preserved a public record of truth.
Cameron asked whether she wanted to leave Central. Maddie looked at her new job contract, the housing initiative proposal, and the photograph of the orphanage children at the game. “No. I’m done letting bullies choose where I belong.”
They returned to St. Catherine’s the next day for the trust signing. Repairs had already begun on the water heater and roof. Sister Elizabeth handed Maddie the first official board seat reserved for a former resident.
The children crowded around Cameron to celebrate the win. Kiara wore his number and told everyone the starting quarterback used to live in their hallway. Pride replaced the shame adults had attached to being an orphan.
Maddie and Cameron signed the trust together, not as owners but as witnesses. The building would remain a home for children long after football stopped making either of them famous.
Outside, Brett watched from a parked car. On the seat beside him lay copies of Linda’s stolen medical records and a reporter’s private contact information. When Maddie stepped into view, he started the engine, determined to turn her most painful secret into the scandal that would destroy everything she and Cameron had built.
