Reborn to Love Mr. Right – Episode 59
Derek’s brain had received the portion of Iteration Four removed from Donald. The Anchor Protocol displaced the memory pattern instead of destroying it, following the old connection to Davis Catalyst. He now carried fragments from Arianna’s forgotten lives.
Federal guards secured the hospital floor while doctors stabilized him. Arianna did not enter his room, but she reviewed the memory map with independent specialists. The transfer included her fear, grief, and physical pain from the first accident.
Hayden worried Derek would gain new information if he woke. The specialists believed the opposite was more likely: incompatible memories could overwhelm his existing identity. Medical ethics required treatment regardless of what he might learn.
Victor requested access to Derek, claiming only he understood Catalyst integration. Prosecutors denied him and recorded the request as proof he anticipated neural transfer. His knowledge connected him further to Iteration Four’s corrupted design.
Derek awakened after midnight screaming that he could not feel his legs. His body was uninjured, but Arianna’s paralysis lived inside the transferred memory. For the first time, he experienced the helplessness he had mocked.
He begged nurses to call Arianna. She declined until doctors confirmed a conversation would not worsen his condition. When she finally entered behind protective glass, he looked at her without his usual certainty.
“You were there for years,” he whispered. He remembered isolation, medical pain, and the moment Ivy admitted the crash was planned. The memories did not make him innocent or automatically remorseful.
Arianna asked what he intended to do with understanding. Derek said he wanted the memories removed. She answered that treatment was his right, but forgetting pain would not erase responsibility for causing it.
He offered to testify against Victor without conditions if doctors helped him. Prosecutors documented the offer but required corroboration. Genuine cooperation would be measured by evidence, not emotion during crisis.
Derek identified a recording Victor made after Arianna’s first crash. It was stored in a legal evidence locker under an unrelated insurance case. Police found the file exactly where he described.
The recording captured Victor congratulating Derek for choosing the northern route and instructing the cardiologist to prepare Donald’s later “heart attack.” Derek’s own voice asked when Taylor Industries would become his.
The evidence linked the two central crimes without relying on future photographs. It also destroyed Derek’s claim that Victor alone planned everything. Cooperation exposed his guilt alongside Victor’s.
Derek signed a complete statement anyway. Whether motivated by remorse, pain, or self-preservation remained unclear. Arianna no longer needed to decide what feeling made accountability valid.
Doctors used the Anchor Protocol with Derek’s consent. His own childhood memories, Jeff’s visits, school records, and present crimes helped separate his identity from Arianna’s fragments.
Before the pattern faded, Derek apologized for kicking her as she died. The apology named the act without excuse. Arianna heard it without offering forgiveness he had not earned.
“Live with knowing,” she said. “That is the part you kept trying to escape.” She left while doctors completed the treatment.
The final core updated Condition Two to satisfied after prosecutors authenticated the recording and filed the last conspiracy charge. Victor and Derek would face justice through present evidence.
Condition Three also changed to satisfied. Arianna had faced Donald’s possible loss without choosing restoration, death, or another reset. The cycle status moved toward closure.
Technicians prepared to shut down the core permanently. Before power faded, it released the sealed packet their mothers had left untouched for years.
The packet contained a live camera view of the server room from somewhere behind the technicians. A woman wearing Arianna’s face stood in the doorway and said, “You satisfied the wrong conditions.”
