Married at First Sight – Episode 80

Christian drove through the storm while Summer stayed connected to Lena by video. Every flooded intersection turned the distance into another test of helplessness.

Lena’s labor progressed too quickly for transfer. The secured hospital team confirmed every identity verbally and locked the maternity floor against unauthorized access.

Nancy waited at the trust office with her advocate. Christian remained beside Summer, though the child about to be born carried his DNA.

That choice mattered to Summer. He did not abandon one family to prove concern for another, and he did not pretend concern was absent.

They reached the hospital minutes before delivery. Summer entered only after Lena called her name.

Lena gripped Summer’s hand through the final contractions. No one praised suffering or described the coercive pregnancy as destiny. The room belonged to the woman doing the work.

A baby boy arrived crying, small but healthy. Lena asked to hold him before anyone discussed tests, paperwork, or future plans.

Summer placed the child against her chest under the nurse’s guidance. Lena looked at him with astonishment rather than instant certainty.

Christian heard the cry from outside the room and closed his eyes. Nancy heard it through an audio connection she had permission to receive, then ended the call before emotion could become intrusion.

Lena named the baby Mateo, after her grandfather. The name came from her history, not the Norton or Cale families.

She confirmed that her sister remained the designated guardian and requested seventy-two hours without visits from genetic contributors. Christian and Nancy accepted through counsel.

Summer returned to Christian in the waiting area. He asked whether Lena and Mateo were safe, nothing more.

She told him yes and held him while he experienced joy, grief, relief, and distance at the same time. Their marriage had room for feelings that did not issue commands.

Spark kicked beneath Summer’s ribs. Christian laughed through tears and placed his hand where she guided it.

The storm caused a brief power fluctuation, but emergency generators activated immediately. Nurses verified every infant bracelet after the lights returned.

Mateo’s bracelet matched Lena’s. His bassinet transmitter, however, displayed the identification number of another newborn on a different floor.

The charge nurse locked every exit. Security discovered that the tracking database had been altered from an external maintenance account.

Summer remembered how her own life began with two infants switched in a hospital. The symmetry was too precise to be accidental.

They rushed back to Lena’s room. She was asleep from exhaustion, and the nurse assigned to the door lay unconscious in the supply alcove.

Mateo’s bassinet was empty, and in his place rested a card bearing the old MIRROR emblem and four words: THE STUDY IS NOT OVER.
