Married at First Sight – Episode 81

The empty bassinet turned every person on the maternity floor into a possible witness. Security sealed the elevators and stairwells while nurses began a room-by-room search.

Summer woke Lena before another stranger could decide what truth she was allowed to hear. Lena’s first movement was toward the space where Mateo had been.

Christian remained outside the room until Lena’s attorney authorized his entry. His money and name could open doors, but neither granted him access to her terror.

The tracking database showed Mateo moving toward the east elevator. Camera footage showed no infant leaving the floor.

Summer realized the signal was attached to something else. A guard found Mateo’s transmitter taped beneath a linen cart headed in the opposite direction.

The false trail bought the kidnapper seven minutes. Hospital plans revealed only one unmonitored route: an obsolete service lift sealed during renovations.

Christian and security reached the basement as the lift opened. A masked orderly pushed a laundry bin toward an ambulance bay.

The orderly abandoned the bin and ran. Christian started after him, then stopped when a thin cry came from beneath the folded sheets.

Mateo lay inside a ventilated carrier, cold but unharmed. Christian lifted neither him nor the evidence; he called the neonatal team and stayed beside the bin until help arrived.

The orderly was captured at the locked gate. He was one of the hospital administrators arrested after the forged induction order, released temporarily after agreeing to cooperate.

He claimed the abduction was Ward’s final instruction. If Continuum collapsed, a public infant switch would prove that identity remained fragile enough to manipulate.

There was no second baby and no intended replacement. The threat had been designed to reopen the oldest wound in Summer’s life and turn Mateo into a symbol before he had spent one day as himself.

Doctors returned Mateo to Lena after matching bracelets, footprints, and genetic records under her supervision. She held him against her chest and refused to let cameras document the reunion.

Nancy received confirmation that he was safe. She cried in a private room and did not ask to visit.

Christian stood behind the glass until Lena looked up. He placed one hand over his heart, then stepped away before gratitude could be mistaken for permission.

Summer found him in the corridor. He had chosen the crying child over chasing the culprit, reversing every lesson his family had taught about victory.

Lena added Christian’s name to the list of people permitted to receive emergency safety updates. It was not an invitation into Mateo’s life, only acknowledgment of what he had done.

The captured administrator surrendered a device containing the final Continuum observation schedule. Every remaining target had been assigned a closing event.

Summer’s file listed childbirth. Alexander’s listed public confession. Grandma Norton’s listed cardiac failure induced by manipulated medication.

The last schedule entry was already in progress: a dosage change had been transmitted to Grandma Norton’s pharmacy that morning.
