Salt Kiss – Episode 19
Tristan had expected kissing a man to feel wrong because every lesson of his childhood insisted it would. Instead, Mark’s mouth felt like the answer to a question Tristan had been too afraid to form.
The realization frightened him more than disgust ever could. He broke the kiss and stepped back, breathing hard.
Mark let him go immediately. No taunt followed, no demand that Tristan explain himself. That restraint removed the anger Tristan wanted to use as cover.
“I’m straight,” Tristan said.
“You’ve told me.”
“Then why did I do that?”
“Because you wanted to.” Mark’s answer was infuriatingly simple. “One choice does not require you to solve your entire identity tonight.”
Tristan paced to the window. He had built his life from fixed categories: soldier or coward, obedient or defiant, straight or everything his father despised. Mark seemed determined to dismantle those divisions one at a time.
“Does this happen with every employee?” he asked.
Mark’s expression cooled. “No.”
“Every bodyguard?”
“There has never been another bodyguard foolish enough to pull a gun on me and return in time to save my life.”
Despite himself, Tristan smiled. It disappeared when Mark came closer.
“You are not interchangeable,” Mark said. “That is precisely the problem.”
The confession revealed more than Tristan expected. Mark’s control depended on distance, yet Tristan had already crossed it. The knowledge placed responsibility alongside desire.
“This can’t interfere with my job.”
“Then decide what you need.”
Tristan considered walking away from the private part of their relationship while keeping the security position. It was the sensible choice. Instead, he said, “I need time.” Mark agreed, but when Tristan left the office, the memory of the kiss followed like a promise neither of them had withdrawn.
