The Quarterback’s First Love – Episode 24

Brett leaned against the concrete pillar beside Maddie’s car as though he still had the right to wait for her. Water darkened his suit, and alcohol sharpened the resentment in his eyes. “Your hero let you leave alone,” he observed.

Maddie kept the keys between her fingers. “Move.” She did not owe him an explanation about Cameron, the kiss, or anything else. The old fear remained, but it no longer dictated her voice.

Brett stepped into her path. “Carter doesn’t want you around anymore, does he? I knew he’d get tired of the orphan act.” The accuracy of his attack revealed that he had watched their disagreement from the courtyard.

“Cameron and I had a private conversation,” Maddie replied. “You don’t get to turn it into your victory.” She tried to pass, but Brett caught the car door before she could open it.

He claimed he had protected her for years and deserved more respect. Maddie almost pitied the version of reality he had built. “You gave me a room and made me pay for it in rent, obedience, and silence. That wasn’t protection.”

Brett’s expression twisted. “You never would have spoken to me like this before.” Maddie met his gaze. “Because I was scared of you. I thought fear meant I cared. I don’t anymore.”

The admission seemed to frighten him. Brett relied on her emotional reaction as proof of his power; indifference offered nothing to control. He lowered his voice and promised she would come back when Cameron abandoned her.

“He only wants you because you’re broken,” Brett said. “One day he’ll get bored, just like I did.” Maddie understood that he was describing himself again. Cameron’s flaws could hurt her, but they did not make Brett’s cruelty true.

Veronica’s heels struck the concrete behind them. She demanded to know what Brett was doing with Maddie. His confidence vanished, replaced by the eager obedience of a man desperate to retain any alliance.

“I was telling her I’m with you now,” he said. Veronica looked unimpressed. She had ended their affair privately the moment he lost the starting position, but keeping him available remained useful.

Then she announced they would enter the Campus Clash charity competition together. The annual event tested athletic skill, teamwork, and campus knowledge before a large student audience. Winning couples became the faces of Central’s charity campaign.

“People already call us the new power couple,” Veronica claimed. Maddie wondered which people she meant. Brett seemed equally surprised but accepted the role because it returned him to a spotlight.

Veronica asked whether Maddie and Cameron would compete. “Unless he’s embarrassed to be seen with you after tonight.” The taunt found the uncertainty Cameron’s secrecy had created.

Maddie knew agreeing without him would be unfair. She also knew refusal would let Veronica transform the banquet argument into a public narrative of rejection. Pride and insecurity combined before judgment could intervene.

“We’ll attend,” Maddie said. Veronica smiled and pointed out that their names were not on the roster. Maddie replied that organizers would likely make room for Central’s starting quarterback.

The reminder of Brett’s demotion hit both antagonists. He told Maddie to shut up, but she no longer obeyed. “You are the backup now, right?” she asked, then opened the car door.

Veronica promised they would see who belonged at the top. Maddie drove away with the victory feeling hollow. She had committed Cameron to a public competition while angry at him for controlling her choices.

In the empty corridor, Brett rounded on Veronica. “What did you say at Cameron’s apartment?” She tried to leave, but he seized her wrist and warned her never to mention Linda’s marriage plan or the threat to Cameron’s career.

Veronica reminded him she no longer dated backup quarterbacks. Brett tightened his grip and threatened her life if she exposed how eagerly he had supported the scheme before Cameron arrived. For the first time, Veronica looked genuinely afraid of the man she had encouraged.

Maddie reached the apartment and found Cameron waiting outside in soaked clothes. She had intended to demand the whole truth, but one new problem arrived first. “I may have entered us in the Campus Clash,” she admitted—and Cameron’s stunned silence told her their argument was far from over.
