The Quarterback’s First Love – Episode 23

Water transformed the elegant ballroom into confusion within seconds. Guests shouted over the alarm, heels slipped on polished floors, and expensive suits darkened beneath the sprinklers. Cameron kept one arm around Maddie while directing people toward the nearest exit.

“Remain calm,” Coach Reynolds called. Staff opened side doors, and the crowd moved into the courtyard. No smoke appeared, but Cameron refused to assume the alarm was false until Maddie stood safely outside.

Cold night air struck her soaked dress. Maddie shivered and looked down at the fabric clinging to her body. Cameron removed his jacket, though it was equally wet, and draped it around her shoulders anyway.

“What was that?” she asked. Cameron scanned the building. “I didn’t smell smoke.” Emergency crews entered while university staff searched for the source. The disruption felt too precisely timed to be accidental.

Veronica emerged beneath Brett’s jacket, loudly complaining about her ruined gown. Her performance was convincing enough for most people, but Maddie noticed the satisfaction she failed to hide when she saw Cameron’s attention fixed entirely on his date.

“You’re soaking wet,” Cameron said, brushing damp hair from Maddie’s face. She looked at his shirt plastered against his chest and answered, “So are you.” The obvious statement became charged beneath the courtyard lights.

Water ran from his jaw. Maddie remembered the hotel bathroom, their accidental fall, and the kiss that followed. Adrenaline from the alarm made everything feel sharper—his warmth beneath the wet shirt, his hands steady at her waist, and the relief of being safe.

Cameron started to make a joke, but Maddie pulled him closer. “Shut up and kiss me.” Surprise lasted only a moment before he obeyed.

The kiss held none of their earlier hesitation. Maddie pressed against him, claiming the desire she had questioned since remembering Jack. Cameron responded with equal hunger before restraint forced him to slow.

They moved beneath an awning where the crowd could not easily see. His forehead rested against hers, both breathing hard. “Mads,” he whispered, and the tenderness in the nickname conflicted with the urgency between them.

She kissed him again, but Cameron stopped. His hands remained at her shoulders, protective rather than possessive. “I don’t think we should do this.” The rejection cut through Maddie’s exhilaration.

“Why?” she asked. Shame rushed in where desire had been. Brett’s final insults echoed: not enough, not woman enough, not worthy of a star quarterback. Cameron’s caution began to resemble confirmation of every insecurity.

“You don’t actually want me,” she said. Cameron immediately denied it. “All I want is you. That’s the problem.” The answer made no sense through the pain rising in her.

He tried to explain that the banquet, the alarm, and the unfinished truth between them made the moment wrong. Maddie heard only another man deciding what she felt. She stepped out of his jacket and returned it.

“There’s something you’re not telling me.” Her recovered memories gave her Jack, but gaps remained after the accident, and Cameron still guarded them. She had accepted patience; now his secrecy stood between every intimate step.

Cameron looked toward the courtyard filled with witnesses. “Not here.” Maddie laughed bitterly. “It’s never the right place or the right time. You keep promising everything after the next event.”

He reached for her, then stopped when she recoiled. “I’m trying not to make your choices for you.” Maddie replied that withholding information was another way to control a choice. The truth struck him silent.

Emergency staff announced there was no fire. Someone had manually triggered the suppression system near the ballroom service entrance. Security began reviewing camera footage, and Veronica edged closer to the exit.

Maddie asked Cameron for the keys to the loaner car. He offered to drive, but she refused. “I need space, and this time I need you to respect that.” Cameron handed them over without argument, fear and regret written across his face.

As Maddie walked away, Brett detached himself from Veronica and followed. Cameron saw him disappear around the building but was trapped by officials asking about the alarm. By the time he broke free, Maddie had entered the dark parking corridor alone—and Brett was waiting between her and the car.
