The Quarterback’s First Love – Episode 22
The football banquet occupied Central’s oldest ballroom, where championship photographs lined paneled walls and donor names gleamed on brass plaques. Maddie paused at the entrance, suddenly aware that many of those donors knew Veronica’s father and Linda Carter personally.
Cameron offered his arm. “We can leave.” Maddie heard no disappointment in the option, only concern. She placed her hand through his elbow. “We came for dinner. I’ve survived worse than rich people with name tags.”
They entered together. Conversation softened as guests recognized Central’s new quarterback and the woman beside him. Cameras lifted, but Cameron had instructed the university press officer that Maddie would answer no personal questions.
Coach Reynolds welcomed them with visible relief. He praised Maddie’s gown and introduced her to several players’ families without mentioning the scandal. His ordinary courtesy helped more than grand protection; it allowed her to exist as a guest rather than a controversy.
Cameron was pulled toward a cluster of scouts. Before leaving, he asked whether Maddie would be comfortable alone. She assured him she could manage ten minutes. Trusting her competence was another form of care he was learning.
At the bar, Brett watched Cameron cross the room. His demotion had altered how people greeted him; handshakes were shorter, and conversations shifted toward the new starter. He drank quickly to dull the humiliation.
Veronica arrived in emerald green and immediately noticed Maddie. Anger sharpened her smile. She had expected a nervous orphan hiding in borrowed clothes, not a poised woman drawing approving glances without trying.
Brett’s attention followed Veronica’s. For a moment, he stared at Maddie with the possessive appreciation of a man noticing value only after someone else claimed it. Veronica caught him and demanded to know whether he was checking out his ex.
“I wasn’t,” he said. She accused him anyway, then snapped when he called her “dude” in frustration. Their alliance contained no affection now, only shared resentment and the need to wound the same people.
Maddie sensed their scrutiny but continued speaking with a professor who remembered her dance scholarship audition. The professor offered to connect her with paid tutoring work in the athletics department. For the first time since losing her job, Maddie saw a path toward stability she could build herself.
Cameron returned and found her exchanging contact information. His pride was warm but restrained. “See? You don’t need me rescuing you.” Maddie corrected him. “I need people who open doors. I’m just learning I can walk through them myself.”
The band shifted into a slow song. Cameron’s expression brightened with recognition. “I love this one.” Maddie doubted he knew the title, but allowed him the excuse. He bowed with theatrical seriousness and asked for a dance.
“Of course, Cameron Carter.” She placed her hand in his and followed him onto the floor. Other couples made space, curious whether the pair from the headlines would perform romance for the room.
Cameron did the opposite. He kept the dance private, guiding her gently and whispering jokes whenever she noticed cameras. Maddie relaxed against him. The ballroom faded until only the rhythm and his familiar heartbeat remained.
“You’re the most gorgeous woman here tonight,” he said. Maddie glanced toward Veronica. “Careful. Statements like that start wars.” Cameron replied that some truths were worth defending.
Veronica watched from beside Brett, fury rising as the crowd admired them. “She thinks clinging to Cameron makes her important,” she said. Brett tried to reassure her that he was still there. “Shut up,” Veronica answered.
She slipped away toward a service corridor and stopped an event worker carrying equipment. Money and her father’s name persuaded him to leave a secured door unattended. Veronica had no intention of causing real harm; she wanted chaos, ruined clothes, and a photograph of Maddie looking foolish.
On the dance floor, Cameron attempted a turn too ambitious for his skill. Maddie laughed and told the celebrated athlete that rhythm did not automatically transfer between sports. “One professional jump,” he bargained. “Then I retire undefeated.”
He lifted her carefully, and Maddie landed against his chest as the room applauded. For one breathless moment, the desire they had interrupted at the hotel returned. Cameron’s gaze dropped to her lips.
Before either could act, an alarm shrieked through the ballroom. Red lights flashed, sprinklers burst overhead, and hundreds of guests surged toward the exits. Cameron wrapped himself around Maddie as icy water poured down—and through the confusion, Veronica watched them with a satisfied smile.
