Twilight Romance: Flash Marriage to Mature Tycoon – Episode 15
The assistant’s words remained suspended in the car. Ray disconnected the call, but silence could not pull the name back. Jocelyn stared at him as the ordinary details of their life rearranged themselves: the expensive house, the private confidence, the manager’s recognition. “Why did he call you Mr. Astor?” she asked.
Ray considered another lie and despised himself for the instinct. He told her Astor was a common surname and that his supervisor sometimes used it as a joke because he acted like a boss. The explanation sounded weak even before it ended. Jocelyn looked out the window, hurt gathering where trust had been.
“Do you think I’m foolish?” she asked. Ray answered no too quickly. She reminded him that she had accepted his privacy, his vague work schedule, and a home no construction wage easily explained. Acceptance was not blindness.
He pulled into a quiet park and turned off the engine. The truth pressed against his ribs, ready to emerge, but fear still controlled him. If she learned he had tested her like a suspect before proposing marriage, she might leave before their relationship had a chance to become real.
Ray admitted that he had connections to Astor Group through contract work. The board occasionally sought his advice because he understood their projects. It was closer to reality, yet still designed to conceal the central fact. Jocelyn studied him with a sadness more painful than anger.
“I never asked how much money you had,” she said. “I asked where you go when you leave our home.” Ray understood the distinction. Her concern was not his status but whether the man beside her existed at all.
He reached for her hand, and she allowed the touch without returning it. Ray promised he was not using her, had not taken her money, and intended every vow he made. Jocelyn said sincerity in one part of a marriage could not excuse dishonesty in another.
Before he found the courage to confess, Harry called. Stacy had left the café furious and taken Caleb to her parents’ house. Harry feared she would keep the baby from him unless he apologized to Tony. Jocelyn’s maternal concern displaced the confrontation for the moment.
She told Harry not to make decisions from fear and promised to speak with him later. When the call ended, Ray offered to help. Jocelyn replied that she needed him to begin by telling the truth, then asked to be taken home.
The drive continued in strained silence. Ray’s phone flashed repeatedly with board messages, each one another demand from the life he had hidden. He ignored them all, but neglecting Astor Group could not repair what he had damaged with Jocelyn.
At the house, she removed the silver locket and placed it carefully on the counter. Ray feared she was also about to remove her wedding ring. Instead, she curled her fingers around it and said she needed space to think.
He offered to sleep in the guest room. Jocelyn nodded, relieved that he did not press her. The distance of a single hallway felt greater than the years he had spent alone.
That evening, Ray joined the board meeting by video with the camera angled toward a blank wall. His directors discussed the Smith review, unaware that the chairman’s marriage was unraveling just outside the door. He authorized a temporary suspension of the deal based solely on documented irregularities.
One director objected that Tony Smith was politically connected. Ray replied that connections did not make false numbers accurate. His judgment remained precise, though every pause carried the memory of Jocelyn asking whether he thought her foolish.
After the meeting, Violet called. She had heard through staff that Ray had missed dinner at the mansion and sensed something was wrong. He told her about the accidental phone call and his failed explanation. Violet’s silence conveyed disappointment sharper than any lecture.
“Tell her now,” she said. Ray argued that Jocelyn was already overwhelmed by Harry’s crisis. Violet replied that waiting for a painless moment was how cowards renamed delay as kindness. Her words echoed Jocelyn’s warning to Harry.
Ray left the study and found the kitchen empty. A folded blanket and pillow waited outside the guest room, but Jocelyn’s purse was gone. Panic tightened his chest until he saw a note beneath his wedding band, which he had removed for the video meeting.
She had gone to meet Harry at a nearby diner and asked Ray not to follow. Jocelyn needed time with her son and time to decide whether she could trust her husband. The note ended without love or anger, only her name.
Ray read it twice. Then his assistant called with worse news: Tony had obtained security footage of the café manager recognizing him and was offering money for confirmation of Ray’s identity. The truth would soon reach Jocelyn from the person most eager to hurt her.
Across town, Jocelyn entered the diner and found Harry waiting in a booth. Tony sat beside him with a photograph on the table. He smiled as she approached and said, “Before you defend your husband again, perhaps you should learn who you married.”
