Twilight Romance: Flash Marriage to Mature Tycoon – Episode 16
Tony tapped the photograph with one thick finger. It showed Ray entering Astor Group’s headquarters through a private door, dressed in a dark suit far finer than anything Jocelyn had seen him wear. The image was grainy, but his face was unmistakable. Her stomach tightened as another piece of their marriage shifted out of place.
Harry looked deeply uncomfortable. He explained that Tony had appeared before Jocelyn arrived and insisted the information concerned her safety. Jocelyn remained standing rather than joining them in the booth. She had endured enough staged concern to recognize another trap.
“What do you want?” she asked. Tony claimed he wanted honesty, a word that sounded absurd in his mouth. He suggested Ray worked for Astor Group and had married her to gather information about the Smith proposal. Since Jocelyn was connected to Stacy, she might have been selected as the easiest route into the family.
The theory was cruelly persuasive because Ray’s secrecy had left empty spaces anyone could fill. Jocelyn remembered his strange questions on their first date and wondered whether every tender moment had contained an unseen purpose. Still, Tony’s eagerness to wound her made caution necessary.
“If Ray wanted information about your business, why would he ask me?” she said. “You made it clear I know nothing about your family’s affairs.” Tony’s smile hardened. He had expected hurt to make her obedient, not analytical.
Harry pushed the photograph back. He said Jocelyn deserved answers from Ray, not accusations from people who disliked him. Tony warned that Harry’s loyalty might cost him his marriage and career. For once, Harry did not retreat.
“If my future depends on helping you torment my mother, I don’t want it,” he said. The words shook as they emerged, but they remained spoken. Jocelyn looked at her son and saw the frightened boy inside him finally give way to the man she had raised.
Tony rose, enraged. He reminded Harry that Stacy’s family had given him status, a home, and opportunities. Harry replied that Jocelyn had given him everything before the Smiths knew his name. The diner quieted as years of unspoken resentment surfaced between them.
Jocelyn placed a hand on Harry’s arm. She did not want him exchanging one form of dependence for another, even in her defense. He had to make choices for himself and Caleb. Harry nodded, understanding that she would love him without using love as a chain.
Tony leaned close to Jocelyn and promised that Ray’s secrets would destroy her. She answered that if her marriage failed, she would survive it as she had survived everything else. “But you will not turn my pain into your weapon,” she said.
The bell above the diner door rang. Ray entered, ignoring every instruction in Jocelyn’s note because his assistant had tracked Tony’s phone to the location. He stopped when he saw the photograph, and Jocelyn read confirmation in the tension across his face.
Tony greeted him with false triumph. “Should we call you foreman, consultant, or something higher?” Ray did not answer. His attention remained on Jocelyn, whose disappointment cut deeper than Tony’s threat.
“I asked you not to follow me,” she said. Ray apologized, explaining that he learned Tony was bringing evidence and feared she would be ambushed. Jocelyn replied that arriving to manage what she saw was not the same as protecting her.
Ray accepted the rebuke. In front of Tony, Harry, and the watching diners, he admitted that the photograph was real. He had business at Astor Group and had concealed the extent of that relationship. Jocelyn asked whether he was a construction worker at all.
“I have overseen construction projects,” he said. The evasive answer hurt her more than a direct confession. Tony laughed and declared Ray a fraud. Ray turned on him with such cold authority that the laughter died.
He warned Tony that harassing Jocelyn would not rescue the Smith contract. The review existed because of financial irregularities, not personal revenge. By revealing knowledge unavailable to an ordinary employee, Ray confirmed that his influence reached far beyond what he had admitted.
Tony demanded his title. Ray refused to make Jocelyn’s truth into entertainment for the Smith family. He asked her to come home, where he would explain without an audience. She considered him for a long moment.
Harry offered Jocelyn a place to stay if she did not want to return with Ray. The offer was sincere, but she knew Stacy would never permit it. More importantly, avoiding the confrontation would not answer anything. She picked up the photograph and told Ray she would hear him out.
Tony watched them leave with fury. His attempt to separate them had instead strengthened Harry’s resistance. He called Stacy and ordered her to bring Caleb home immediately; if Harry wanted to choose sides, Tony intended to make the price unbearable.
Outside, Ray opened the car door, but Jocelyn did not enter. She held up the photograph and said, “One more half-truth, and our marriage ends tonight.” Ray looked at the woman he had grown terrified to lose and understood that the next words would decide everything.
