Sophie answered immediately. “Patrick, is something wrong with the Lake contract?”

“The opposite,” Patrick said. “The fire-safety issue has been resolved. The suspension was entered in error, and your inspection is back on schedule.”

She stood so quickly that Ted reached out to steady the glass on the table. “Already?”

“Already. You will receive written confirmation tonight.”

Sophie thanked him and ended the call. For several seconds, she stared at the screen, waiting for the relief to feel believable.

“Well?” Ted asked.

“It is fixed.” A laugh escaped her. “The review has been withdrawn.”

Ted checked his own messages. “My contact has not even opened what I sent.”

“Maybe someone above him caught the mistake.”

“Maybe.” Ted sounded unconvinced. “Or your mysterious husband knows people he has not mentioned.”

Sophie remembered Justin’s calm promise: Just wait and see. She also remembered how easily Lake Enterprises had accepted every contract revision.

“He said he could help,” she admitted.

“Then why did you call me?”

“Because trusting someone and staking my mother’s company on his secrets are different things.”

Ted softened. “You never need a reason to call me.”

Sophie reached across the table and squeezed his hand. “Thank you, Teddy Bear.”

The front door opened before he could answer. Justin stood on the threshold, having followed the location Sophie had once shared with him for emergencies.

His gaze dropped to their joined hands. “What the hell are you doing here?”
