The Call Boy I Met in Paris – Episode 48

Justin’s question was aimed at Ted, but Sophie answered first. “I invited him.”

She released Ted’s hand and stood. The movement did nothing to soften Justin’s expression.

“He has been a huge help,” Sophie continued. “I called him about the fire-safety problem.”

“The problem is solved.”

“I know. Patrick just called.” Sophie searched Justin’s face. “Was that you?”

“I told you I would handle it.”

Ted rose from the sofa. “And she was supposed to sit alone and hope you kept your word?”

“This is between my wife and me.”

The word wife sounded less like affection than a boundary Justin expected Ted to obey. Sophie’s gratitude began to sour into irritation.

Justin looked at her casual clothes, then at Ted. “Could you dress a little more appropriately when you have male guests?”

Sophie stared at him. “Guest? Ted is my best friend.”

“He is still a man.”

“And I am still capable of deciding what I wear.” She folded her arms. “You do not get to arrive uninvited and police me.”

Ted’s mouth twitched, but he wisely said nothing. His amusement only made Justin’s jealousy more obvious.

“I came because you stopped replying,” Justin said. “Your location led me here.”

“Then you knew I was safe.”

“Safe is not the same as comfortable.”

Sophie understood at last. “You are jealous.”

Justin’s jaw tightened. “I am not jealous.” Ted laughed aloud, destroying the denial before it finished leaving his mouth.
