We Will Love Again – Episode 42

Noah arrived at dinner carrying no gifts. Alaina noticed because the man he had become could buy anything, while the young man she remembered had offered time instead.

The restaurant was quiet and ordinary. He had chosen it for privacy, not status.

“Triple AI needs me in Los Angeles,” he told her after they ordered. “I won’t be following you to San Francisco.”

Alaina smiled at the directness. “Thank you for not pretending you considered it.”

“I considered several irrational alternatives.”

His honesty made her laugh, the first unguarded sound they had shared since reuniting. For a moment, the years between them loosened.

They agreed not to make promises designed to defeat uncertainty. They would call when they wanted, visit when practical, and speak before making assumptions.

“Those sound like basic rules,” Noah observed.

“We were terrible at basic rules.”

The meal moved through safer subjects: her production schedule, his expansion, and the apartment she would rent near the studio.

Noah asked about her story without offering revisions. Alaina described a romance about two people who mistook sacrifice for communication.

“Subtle,” he said.

“Completely fictional.”

The warmth between them deepened, but neither named it. Rebuilding trust required more than recreating old chemistry.

Outside, Noah walked her to the curb. The city moved around them while goodbye waited.

“May I kiss you?” he asked.

The question carried more tenderness than entitlement. Alaina searched his face and shook her head.

Disappointment flickered, but he stepped back. “All right.”

She touched his cheek. “Ask me again when I come home.”

Before Noah could answer, a camera flashed across the street, proving their private beginning had already attracted another witness.
