We Will Love Again – Episode 40

Noah and Alaina reached the hospital within minutes of each other. The emergency entrance brought back memories neither wanted: fluorescent lights, unanswered questions, and the conversation that had divided their lives.

Peter met them near reception. He had been at the airport for another flight when Nora collapsed in the security line and recognized her from years earlier.

“She was conscious when the ambulance left,” he said. “That’s all I know.”

Noah thanked him, then turned toward the treatment doors. Money and influence could secure specialists, but they could not make the doors open sooner.

Alaina sat beside him. She did not offer false reassurance or ask him to forgive Nora because she was ill.

“You don’t have to stay,” Noah said after a long silence.

“I know.” The answer meant she remained by choice.

A physician eventually explained that Nora had suffered a severe stress response compounded by exhaustion. Her condition was stable, but she would remain overnight for observation.

Relief weakened Noah’s posture. Alaina touched his shoulder, and this time neither withdrew.

Nora asked to see them together. In the hospital room, she looked smaller without the armor of immaculate clothes and certainty.

“I was leaving Los Angeles,” she told Noah. “I thought giving you space was the only useful thing left to do.”

“You could have told me.” The irony was painful enough to soften his anger. Their family had spent years making secret sacrifices instead of having difficult conversations.

Nora looked at Alaina. “I gave you the letter because it belonged to you. I did not expect it to repair anything.”

“It didn’t,” Alaina said honestly. “But it helped me understand.”

Noah sat beside the bed. He was not ready to erase what happened, yet the fear of losing his mother had clarified what punishment could never accomplish.

“We need boundaries,” he said. “And time. But I don’t want a life without you.”

Nora closed her eyes against tears. “That is more than I deserve.”

Later, Noah walked Alaina to the hospital entrance. Dawn colored the sky, echoing the morning after his midnight demand weeks earlier, though everything between them had changed.

“You never answered my dinner invitation,” he reminded her.

Alaina looked at the man who had hurt her, believed her, and finally learned to let her choose. “One dinner,” she said. As Noah smiled, her phone rang with news that the production company wanted her in another city for six months—starting the following week.
