We Will Love Again – Episode 31
Noah read the resignation twice, as if the words might rearrange themselves into something less final. Alaina had signed away the promotion, her desk, and the daily proximity he had once used as punishment. Now that he wanted the chance to make things right, she was choosing the one thing he could not buy back: distance.
“You’re leaving tonight?” he asked. The hotel lobby continued around them, all muted conversations and polished surfaces, while Nora watched the consequences of her interference unfold.
Alaina held his gaze. “I’m leaving Crazy Maple. I’m not disappearing.” The distinction mattered, although she could see how little comfort it gave him. “I need to know that my next decision belongs to me.”
Noah’s first impulse was to reject the resignation, offer a better title, or explain why staying would be practical. Each response would repeat the mistake she had just named. He forced himself to loosen his grip on the papers.
“Joey will ask you to reconsider,” he said. “The acquisition team will too.”
“They can ask.” Alaina’s voice remained gentle but steady. “The answer will still be no.”
Nora stepped forward. “You don’t have to sacrifice your career to prove a point.” Her concern sounded sincere, but Alaina could not forget how often Nora had described control as concern.
“I’m not sacrificing it,” Alaina replied. “I’m finally separating it from both of you.”
The words landed without cruelty. That made them harder for Noah to resist. He had entered Crazy Maple intending to dominate Alaina’s world, then offered to rebuild it once guilt replaced anger. Neither approach had left room for her to direct her own life.
“All right.” His acceptance cost him visibly. “I won’t stand in your way.”
Alaina searched his face, expecting a condition. None came. For the first time since his return, Noah allowed her choice to remain untouched.
“Thank you,” she said. The gratitude between them felt too formal for people who once planned a marriage, but it was honest.
Nora looked from one to the other. “And what happens now?”
“Now Alaina decides what she wants,” Noah answered. He folded the resignation and returned it instead of keeping it as leverage. “So do you.”
Nora understood the challenge. She could continue defending the past, or she could accept that loving her son no longer entitled her to arrange his future. No easy apology could resolve that choice.
Alaina turned toward the exit. Noah wanted to follow, but restraint was the first proof he could offer that he had listened.
At the revolving door, she paused. Part of her had expected him to stop her, and another part was relieved when he did not. Freedom carried an unexpected loneliness.
She walked into the Los Angeles night with no job waiting and no certainty that leaving was wise. Still, every step belonged to her.
Noah remained beside his mother until Alaina vanished into the traffic. “If you interfere again,” he said quietly, “you won’t be protecting me. You’ll be choosing a life without me.”
Before Nora could respond, Noah’s phone rang. Joey’s panicked voice filled the line: Triple AI’s board had discovered the personal reason behind the acquisition, and the entire deal was about to be suspended.
