The Virgin’s Bucket List – Episode 33
Lindsay stared at the empty gallery while Wayne checked the phone. Messages remained, but the recording and blue-box photographs had vanished. A device-management profile she had never installed appeared in the settings, granting remote access.
Grant had demonstrated power without touching them. Wayne wanted to return to the café, but Lindsay stopped him. Anger without evidence would let Grant portray them as unstable teenagers chasing family money.
Jeremy helped remove the profile and trace its installation. It had arrived through the link in Wayne’s scholarship email when Lindsay opened the attached packet on her phone. The altered document had been both a legal trap and a digital one.
Fortunately, Daniel had photographed the second box before making contact. Julie had also copied the first box’s contents onto an external drive. Grant erased Lindsay’s evidence but not the truth.
Mike examined the bank record Grant provided. The payment to Catherine was genuine, but it never entered their household accounts. He remembered Catherine insisting that a frightened friend had entrusted her with something more important than medical bills.
Evelyn finally understood. Catherine used the money to establish James’s protected identity and support Mara during the first year. Grant had unknowingly financed the disappearance he later blamed on her.
The payment was not proof of corruption; it was proof that Catherine kept a child safe. Lindsay felt pride and grief collide. Her mother had carried a dangerous responsibility while illness consumed her strength.
Daniel suggested publishing everything immediately. Lindsay refused. Jamie’s adoption history and Evelyn’s abuse were not public property simply because exposing them might defeat Grant.
Wayne supported her. He would not protect his inheritance by sacrificing his brother’s privacy. They needed evidence focused on Grant’s conduct rather than the family’s pain.
Mr. Russell contacted the university compliance office. The altered scholarship packet had bypassed normal systems and originated from an administrator appointed by Grant. An internal investigation began, though officials warned it could take months.
Lindsay wrote a confidential timeline using only facts each family member consented to share. Catherine’s bank transfer, Grant’s trust authority, and the manipulated release created a pattern without revealing Jamie’s identity.
Her journalism-program mentor reviewed the draft. She praised the reporting but warned that publishing accusations against a powerful donor required independent verification. Family testimony alone would not be enough.
Lindsay searched Catherine’s old records for the destination of Grant’s payment. A canceled check named the Starlight Youth Foundation, an organization dissolved shortly after James disappeared.
Its final director was not Catherine or Mara. It was Mike Johnson. Lindsay carried the document to her father, expecting another secret.
Mike looked genuinely stunned. Catherine had asked him to sign incorporation papers for a youth charity, claiming it would fund temporary housing. He never knew Grant’s money passed through it.
His signature made him legally responsible for records that no longer existed. If Grant accused him of misusing funds, Mike could lose his job and face investigation. The trap had been waiting for years.
Mike offered to confess everything he knew, even if it ended his coaching career. Lindsay saw that Grant expected fear to divide them. Instead, the threat finally pushed Mike to choose family over football without hesitation.
Before they could contact an attorney, two district officials arrived at the house. Acting on an anonymous financial complaint, they suspended Mike from coaching and ordered him to surrender all school property by morning.
