The Quarterback’s First Love – Episode 51
The celebration at St. Catherine’s ended the instant Cameron answered the police call. Brett’s abandoned vehicle sat beyond the rear gate, its driver’s door open and hospital restraints cut on the floor.
Coach Reynolds moved every child into the main hall while officers searched the grounds. Cameron stayed beside Maddie, resisting the instinct to run into danger without a plan.
“He wants you to chase him,” Maddie said. Brett had built every confrontation around forcing someone else to react. This time they would not follow his script.
Security reviewed exterior cameras. Footage showed Brett leaving the car in medical scrubs and entering the maintenance shed behind the new cottage.
Police surrounded the shed, but it was empty. A trapdoor led into an old service tunnel connecting the heating system to the orphanage basement.
Cameron remembered the tunnel from childhood games. One branch ended beneath the former infirmary; another opened near the chapel. Brett could reach the children without crossing a guarded door.
Maddie shared the map from memory. Officers divided their search while staff evacuated everyone through the front courtyard.
Kiara was missing. Her championship shirt lay beside the kitchen, and a basement door stood partly open.
Maddie’s fear became focus. Brett wanted leverage, not a silent escape. He would keep Kiara alive if he believed she could force Maddie to come alone.
A message arrived from Kiara’s phone: Bring Cameron’s key to the old chapel. No police.
The brass key represented the cottage trust, but Brett believed it controlled the orphanage property and Cameron’s money. His understanding of love still reduced everything to ownership.
Police fitted Maddie with a hidden microphone and planned positions around the chapel. Cameron objected to her entering until she reminded him that Kiara needed a familiar, calm face.
“We go together,” Maddie said. Brett had demanded separation because he knew partnership made them harder to control.
They crossed the tunnel slowly. Cameron’s ribs protested each crouched step, but he followed police instructions instead of charging ahead.
The chapel door opened onto candlelight. Brett held Kiara near the altar, one arm around her shoulders and a broken piece of metal pressed against his own wrist rather than hers.
He demanded the key and access to Cameron’s accounts. Cameron placed the brass key on the floor, explaining it opened only a cottage door.
Brett’s desperation cracked. Football, Veronica, money, and public admiration were gone. He blamed Maddie for revealing the emptiness beneath them.
Maddie spoke gently. “Kiara did nothing to you. Let her walk to me, and I’ll stay.” Brett loosened his grip, tempted by the control he once held over her.
Kiara ran. As Brett reached for Maddie, Cameron blocked him without striking. Police entered from both sides and forced Brett to the floor.
The officers led him away in permanent restraints. Cameron opened his hand and found the brass key still there; the one on the floor was a copy. This time, planning had protected everyone—and Brett’s power ended without Cameron sacrificing himself.
