The Quarterback’s First Love – Episode 27
Campus Clash morning turned the university quad into a festival. Bleachers surrounded obstacle lanes, banners advertised local charities, and student broadcasters interviewed competitors beneath a bright autumn sky. The event looked cheerful enough to conceal how much resentment had gathered beneath it.
Maddie arrived wearing a borrowed team shirt with her own name printed across the back. Cameron had ordered it only after asking permission, a small sign that their new rule mattered. She wore the silver football charm at her throat.
“Nervous?” he asked. Maddie admitted she was. Hundreds of students had watched her humiliation online; now many expected romance, revenge, or failure. Competing meant turning that gaze into something she chose.
Cameron offered his little finger. “Coffee, dinner, and public humiliation for charity.” She linked hers with his. “In that order?” Their shared smile quieted the noise around them.
Veronica and Brett entered to loud music, dressed in matching red athletic gear. She waved as though elected queen of the campus; Brett performed confidence for spectators who still remembered him as starter.
The host announced that Campus Clash would test teamwork, strength, speed, and knowledge. Points from early rounds would determine which two couples reached a final challenge. The winning pair would direct the charity donation and headline Central’s fall campaign.
The first event required partners to carry water through an obstacle course without spilling. Maddie and Cameron began badly. He accelerated before she found balance, and half their bucket drenched his shoes.
“Are you trying to win or audition for another sprinkler disaster?” she demanded. Cameron laughed, slowed to her cadence, and let Maddie call each turn. Their second half was nearly flawless.
Veronica screamed at Brett throughout their run. He possessed strength but ignored instructions, hitting a barrier that soaked them both. They still finished narrowly ahead through pure speed.
In the trivia round, Maddie recognized campus history from scholarship orientation. Cameron followed her answers without questioning them, and they gained the lead. Brett mocked the academic questions until he realized Veronica knew fewer answers than Maddie.
The third event was a blindfold maze. Cameron wore the blindfold while Maddie guided him by voice. The task touched an old fear: trusting someone else to see danger he could not. Maddie’s calm directions carried him through.
Near the finish, Veronica deliberately shouted a false command. Cameron hesitated, then chose Maddie’s voice and avoided the barrier. They crossed first while the crowd cheered.
“You knew which one was me,” Maddie said. Cameron removed the blindfold. “I’d know you anywhere.” The answer stirred more than childhood memory; it described the attention he gave her now.
During the break, Maddie noticed an organizer swapping equipment near the throwing station. The football assigned to Cameron glistened unnaturally. She mentioned it, but the official claimed all equipment had been inspected.
Cameron wiped a finger over the surface and found clear oil. Sabotage was obvious, but accusing Veronica without proof could create the exact scene she wanted. He photographed the ball and requested a replacement.
The organizer refused, citing randomized equipment rules. Brett overheard and challenged Cameron to proceed. “A real quarterback can throw anything,” he said, pleased by an advantage he pretended not to understand.
Maddie wanted to withdraw. Winning did not justify risking Cameron’s shoulder with unsafe gear. He promised he would not endanger himself, then examined the ball’s seams and adjusted his grip.
“We can expose this now,” she insisted. Cameron replied that they would preserve the evidence and expose it after everyone watched him defeat the scheme. His confidence thrilled the crowd but worried her; pride had ruined Brett, and talent did not make Cameron invulnerable.
The host announced that only one event remained before the final. Veronica smiled from across the field, certain the oiled football would slip or veer. Brett stepped forward with a clean ball and landed a perfect throw through the distant target.
Cameron took the sabotaged ball. As he settled behind the line, Maddie saw the organizer signal Veronica. She raised her phone and began recording them both, determined that whether Cameron won or failed, the real competition would end with the truth revealed.
