The Call Boy I Met in Paris – Episode 68

No one moved. Robert Cooper remained half-standing beside his chair, one hand raised as if the unfinished vote could protect him from the officers at the door. His face lost color while the directors looked toward him with growing alarm.

Kendall spoke into the silence. “Sheriff, that is Robert Cooper.”

The sheriff approached the table. “Mr. Cooper, you are under arrest on multiple sexual assault charges.”

Cooper stared at Sophie. “This is your doing.”

“The women who reported you did this,” she replied. She refused to let him erase their agency by turning his victims into pieces in a boardroom fight.

He backed away from the officer. “These are lies. Disgruntled employees make accusations whenever they want money.”

“You can address the charges through counsel.” The sheriff took his arm. “Stand up and come with us.”

Cooper looked to Sophie’s father for intervention, but no corporate title could stop an arrest warrant. The man who had demanded respect for his years of service suddenly appeared smaller than the authority he abused.

“Do something,” Cooper said. “You know what this girl is trying to accomplish.”

Sophie’s father remained silent. Protecting Cooper now would connect him publicly to the accusations and destroy what credibility he still held with the board.

The deputy secured Cooper’s wrists and guided him toward the door. He continued protesting, but the polished boardroom absorbed his anger without answering.

When the doors closed, Sophie turned to the two directors who had prepared to support the removal motion. “Mr. Landon, Mr. Hayes, what did you say just before the sheriff entered?”

Neither man met her eyes. One lowered his hand; the other rearranged the papers in front of him.

“Right,” Sophie said. “We can proceed to the next topic.”

The secretary quietly marked the removal motion as withdrawn for lack of a second willing to maintain it. Power in the room shifted with remarkable speed, abandoning Cooper as soon as association with him became dangerous.

Sophie did not celebrate. The arrest represented years of fear carried by women who had worked beneath Cooper, and their complaints deserved more than becoming a convenient corporate victory.

She opened Kendall’s second folder. “The misconduct investigation is now a legal matter. Our responsibility is to preserve evidence and protect every employee who cooperates.”

Then she distributed another set of records. “I have also found evidence of embezzlement within Swift Enterprise.”
