The Alpha Queen Returns – Episode 62

The ancient Moon Wolf’s divided face remained in every communication crystal. The local laws ignored renewal requests, freezing gravity, time, light, and mental boundaries at their current settings. No immediate catastrophe followed, but the kingdom had lost the ability to correct errors.

“What trial?” Caroline demanded. The image answered through both internal voices. Before creating the Framework, the ancient node had divided her judgment into preservation and liberation. She seeded both patterns through future Rewrite Nodes, expecting one descendant to reconcile them when standardized reality became unsustainable.

Caroline rejected the word descendant. The third protocol protected her identity from assignments based on pattern or purpose. “You built capacities into me. You did not build my choices.” The ancient face smiled as if the objection itself fulfilled a prediction.

The trial placed the kingdom inside a sealed period of seven hours. Each law network would receive escalating failures while preservation and liberation proposed opposing solutions. If Caroline selected one authority permanently, the world would inherit that philosophy. If she chose neither before the period ended, every law would revert to pre-Framework instability.

Jessica recognized manufactured urgency. The ancient node had framed three options, each requiring acceptance of its authority to test them. “A trial is only legitimate if the person being tested consented.” The image replied that existence had already entered the trial through dependence on the node pattern.

The first failure struck the western mountains. Gravity doubled around mining settlements, trapping workers underground. Support beams groaned beneath weight they had never been designed to carry, and rescuers could barely lift their own arms. Families outside the shafts heard voices through stone while local councils discovered their renewal controls had vanished. The silver voice proposed central normalization across all territories. The black voice proposed dissolving gravity authority so each trapped community could rewrite its own conditions.

Either solution carried danger. Central normalization would override regions that had chosen lighter or stronger gravity. Full dissolution could create hundreds of conflicting fields. Caroline opened communication with the miners instead of choosing an inherited answer.

They needed temporary relief, not a permanent philosophy. Neighboring gravity councils voluntarily lent authority to the affected region for one hour. Together they reduced weight underground while preserving surrounding anchors. The solution came from mutual aid, neither centralized command nor isolated freedom.

The ancient image marked the response as invalid because it did not resolve the governing principle. Caroline accepted the penalty. “People are not examples for your argument.” The local gravity locks tightened, but the miners escaped before the next failure. Their families recorded every borrowed authority and repayment so emergency cooperation could not quietly become permanent control.

Time fractured in the capital. Several districts accelerated while the palace nearly stopped. Bread spoiled between one breath and the next in the eastern quarter, while rain hung motionless over the royal courtyard. The late king became trapped between seconds, his reconstructed body especially vulnerable to discontinuity. Jessica could reach him only by entering the slowed zone.

The silver voice urged Caroline to standardize time immediately. The black voice warned that using node authority once would establish permanent precedent. Jessica crossed the boundary before her daughter decided, carrying a portable time anchor developed by civilian observers.

She aged several days during the short walk but reached the king. Together they renewed their relationship as a local reference, allowing the observers outside to align the zone. When they emerged, silver had appeared in Jessica’s hair, a cost she had chosen without making Caroline responsible.

The second response also combined shared structure with voluntary participation. The ancient node refused to recognize it. The trial was designed to select an absolute, not learn from solutions outside its categories.

Rowan studied the lock and found its authority older than the Framework. The ancient creator had embedded it into the node pattern before division, beyond all four protocol fragments. Caroline could not revoke a rule that technically belonged to her own structural identity.

Future Caroline proposed separating from the node entirely. The kingdom now had distributed law networks capable of survival without a Rewrite Node. Caroline could surrender both voices and live as an ordinary wolf—if the separation did not kill her.

Jessica refused to influence the decision. She described what she wanted—her daughter alive and free—then admitted those desires could point toward opposite choices. Caroline thanked her for making love visible without turning it into an order.

The third failure opened the boundary between living wolves and every erased version of them. Citizens encountered alternate selves carrying incompatible marriages, crimes, loyalties, and children. Identity disputes erupted before anyone could establish which lives belonged in the present.

The third protocol provided an answer: identity belonged to the person living it. Alternate selves could exist without replacing one another. Yet the trial locked the protocol, forcing courts and families to choose a single authentic version.

Caroline felt both ancient voices waiting. Preservation would select the version native to the current world. Liberation would dissolve distinctions and allow every self equal claim to every relationship. Neither respected the people affected.

She placed her hands over the divided mark and chose separation—not from one voice, but from the ancient node’s ownership of both. The mark split down the center. Silver and black figures tore themselves from her body, leaving Caroline unconscious between two versions of the power that had defined her.
