Snatched a Billionaire to Be My Husband – Episode 39

The vault door resisted Byron’s emergency code while smoke spread along the ceiling. Cora pressed Charles’s drive and statement inside her coat, then dropped near the floor where the air remained clearer. The alarm identified a chemical fire in the building, but no heat reached them. Someone had activated containment without an actual blaze.

Byron pulled the manual release panel from the wall. Its cable had been severed electronically by a safety lock controlled through Hansen Holdings’ old emergency network. Helena had once accessed that system through Nocturne, but her credentials were frozen and she remained in federal custody. The command had traveled from the Vale archive through a connection created during the joint acquisition.

Cora called Carter. The signal broke beneath the building, yet one message escaped: VAULT—REMOTE LOCK—ARCHIVE. Carter notified firefighters and raced toward the foundation, where the scheduled inventory team was already assembling for the following morning.

The smoke stung Cora’s throat. Byron used his jacket to cover her mouth and searched for the fire-suppression sensor. She refused to let him waste his own protection, folding the fabric so they could share it. Marriage, she thought grimly, was apparently learning to breathe through the same strip of cloth while someone tried to bury the truth.

Behind a shelving unit, Byron found a maintenance conduit too narrow for either of them but large enough to reach the outer lock mechanism. Cora removed the necklace transmitter from their visit to the Vale estate; its rigid clasp fit between the cable contacts. Byron guided her hand while she bridged the circuit.

The door released with a violent click. Firefighters met them in the corridor and confirmed the smoke came from a nonlethal training canister planted in the ventilation room. The attack was intended to frighten or delay them, not necessarily kill them, though no one could know how Cora’s pregnancy would react.

At the hospital, the baby’s heartbeat remained steady. Cora listened until the sound loosened the terror she had refused to feel inside the vault. Byron sat beside her with smoke darkening his cuffs, his hand open on the bed rather than closed around hers. She took it when she was ready.

Carter called from the Vale archive. Celeste had been found unconscious beside the control terminal, struck from behind. Her access card initiated the remote command, but security footage showed a masked person using it after the attack. Once again, evidence pointed toward her too neatly.

The inventory was moved to a federal facility. Roland, Adrian, Celeste, and Miriam were ordered to remain available while investigators examined the archive. Roland denied financing Malcolm and demanded to see Charles’s statement. Cora refused until she read the complete record herself.

Charles explained that Roland’s authorization funded the purchase of Lane debt, but the digital approval was issued while Roland was hospitalized after heart surgery. Miriam held his proxy during that period. The document proved only that his authority had been used, not that he made the decision.

The drive contained minutes from a secret meeting between Miriam and Malcolm. She offered him access to Vale capital if he pressured Charles into surrendering the guardian evidence. Malcolm instead expanded the operation, intending to seize Lane Capital and sell Cora’s identity to the highest bidder.

Miriam had tried to stop him after learning the scale of the fraud. Charles refused to trust her and prepared to expose them both. His death allowed Malcolm to blame him, while Miriam retreated into silence to preserve the guardian plan. Her inaction had protected the crime even if she did not order the killing.

Cora sent the files to federal investigators. Evelyn wept when she saw Miriam’s signature, grieving the friend who saved her and the strategist who later treated that rescue as ownership. Both versions had always been real.

Miriam disappeared from police supervision before agents could arrest her. A guard found her room empty and the window locked. Hospital footage showed her leaving in a physician’s coat using clearance generated by the Vale archive during Celeste’s attack.

Roland called an emergency family meeting and asked Cora to present the evidence before the succession vote. Adrian wanted the vote canceled; Celeste, recovering from a concussion, insisted cancellation would trigger a lender default threatening thousands of jobs. The system had been designed so that family dysfunction endangered everyone beneath it.

Cora proposed a temporary independent trustee with no Vale family connection. Byron’s ethics office supplied candidates, and employee representatives were invited to participate. Roland resisted surrendering control to outsiders until Cora reminded him that insiders had spent decades turning his company into a private battlefield.

He finally agreed, contingent on board approval. Cora would attend with Charles’s evidence but would not vote the shares assigned to her by the DNA report. She refused to let a secret test make her a director before she had chosen whether to accept any legal relationship to Roland.

Minutes before the meeting, every board member received a video from Miriam. She stood inside an unknown room beside shelves of original trust records and announced that if Cora did not activate the guardian clause by noon, she would release evidence proving Roland had ordered Evelyn’s death twenty-seven years ago.
