Salt Kiss – Episode 12
Morning brought clarity without relief. Tristan woke in his new room at the Lyonesse with fragments of the previous night returning in humiliating detail: Dinah’s leash, Mark’s fury, and the quiet promise that surrender would remain Tristan’s choice.
He dressed quickly, using routine to restore order. The room was comfortable but impersonal, selected for an employee who might need to move at a moment’s notice. Tristan appreciated that. He had no intention of mistaking the club for home.
Mark waited in his office with coffee and a security file. No reference to Tristan’s arousal or defiance appeared in his greeting. The restraint felt deliberate.
“Dinah has been suspended pending an investigation,” Mark said. “The fruit came from a restricted service intended for informed guests. It should never have reached you without an explanation.”
Tristan absorbed the information. “You’re punishing her because of me?”
“I’m enforcing the rules because they apply to everyone.” Mark pushed the file toward him. “Power without consent is abuse. If you remember nothing else about this place, remember that.”
The sentence challenged every assumption Tristan had carried into the Lyonesse. His father used power as entitlement. The army used it as necessity. Mark, of all people, insisted that authority had to be granted.
The file contained floor plans, access routes, staff credentials, and emergency procedures. Tristan’s professional instincts took over. He identified weak points immediately, asking questions about cameras, private entrances, and the vault the attackers had targeted.
Mark answered without condescension. Their rhythm changed as they worked—less employer and reluctant recruit, more two men assessing a shared threat. Tristan found the shift unexpectedly satisfying.
“The men from yesterday knew the vault existed,” Tristan said. “That means someone talked.”
“Or someone wanted me frightened.” Mark’s calm returned, but Tristan recognized tension beneath it. The attack had not been random.
“Until I know which, you don’t move through the club alone.” Tristan tapped the unsecured service corridor on the plan. “And this entrance gets a second camera.”
Mark’s eyebrow lifted. “Giving me orders already?”
“Keeping you alive.” Tristan met his gaze. “That’s what you hired me for.”
Approval warmed Mark’s expression. “Very well. In matters of security, I’ll follow your lead.” Hearing the dominant owner yield authority so easily surprised Tristan.
They spent the afternoon inspecting the building. When club members addressed Mark with deference, Tristan watched for fear and found mostly trust. Mark corrected careless behavior but never humiliated anyone who had not invited it.
At the private room from the previous night, Tristan stopped. His body remembered before his mind could retreat. Mark noticed but did not touch him.
“Knowing the rules won’t erase what you felt,” Mark said. “It only means the next choice can truly be yours.” Tristan stared into the room and realized Mark was not asking whether desire existed. He was waiting to see what Tristan would do with it.
