I’m In Love With My Brother’s Best Friend?! – Episode 39
Cole asked Professor Calloway to listen before judging Kaitlyn. Then he began reciting the central argument of her paper from memory.
Business ethics and law depended on the creation and enforcement of regulations. Those systems fostered trust between companies and consumers, producing a fairer marketplace.
The class fell silent. Cole quoted the paper’s ideas with a precision Maddy could not imitate. Professor Calloway asked how he knew the contents when she alone had graded it.
Cole answered that he was there while Kaitlyn wrote it. The simple statement detonated through the room. Students immediately understood the intimacy it implied.
Professor Calloway demanded clarification. Kaitlyn closed her eyes, knowing the secret had reached its end.
Cole said Kaitlyn was his girlfriend. He repeated the word when shocked whispers obscured it. For the first time, he claimed her without jealousy, danger, or alcohol forcing the confession.
The declaration cost him the anonymity he had defended since she moved in. Yet relief accompanied the fear. Kaitlyn was no longer hidden.
Professor Calloway called the relationship highly inappropriate. A teaching assistant dating a student presented an obvious conflict of interest.
Maddy immediately suggested Cole had written the paper. If they were together, favoritism seemed inevitable. The accusation threatened both of them again.
Cole continued quoting Kaitlyn’s work. It argued that ethical enforcement prevented corruption and exploitation. He knew the language because he had watched her struggle, research, and revise—not because he created it.
Kaitlyn asked why anyone would cheat on an ethics paper. The irony drew uneasy attention to Maddy, whose accusation increasingly resembled projection.
Maddy insisted the work belonged to her. Professor Calloway invited her to summarize its argument. Confidence deserted her.
She produced a shallow explanation about businesses punishing people who stole. The answer lacked the paper’s structure, language, and understanding.
Professor Calloway needed no further proof. She ordered Maddy to gather her things and report to the dean. The actual cheater had exposed herself.
Maddy protested, but no one defended her. Her attempt to weaponize the relationship had failed to obtain the internship and placed her own enrollment at risk.
Kaitlyn should have felt victorious. Instead, she looked at Cole and saw the professional consequences waiting. He had saved her by declaring a relationship the university might forbid.
Professor Calloway turned to them. Vindicating the paper did not resolve the conflict of interest. She ordered both to remain after class.
Students filed out beneath a storm of gossip. Sammy gave Kaitlyn an astonished look that promised endless questions. Cole remained beside her.
Maddy paused at the door and glared back. Even defeated, she had accomplished one goal: their secret now belonged to the entire campus.
When the classroom emptied, Professor Calloway closed the door. Kaitlyn and Cole stood together before her desk, about to learn whether honesty had saved their futures—or destroyed them both.
