I’m In Love With My Brother’s Best Friend?! – Episode 19

Silence followed Kaitlyn’s confession. She hurried to explain that being a virgin did not mean she did not want him. The words tangled beneath the fear rising in her chest.

Cole stepped back. Desire vanished behind shock and guilt, and Kaitlyn interpreted the distance through every insecurity she carried. To him, she must look inexperienced, immature, and foolish.

She remembered girls mocking her before her first kiss. Years later, the same shame returned with greater force. Perhaps Amber was right that a man like Cole required someone on his level.

Cole apologized. Kaitlyn heard rejection, but his mind was elsewhere. He imagined the weight of becoming her first lover and the trust Ryan had placed in him.

He said he had crossed a line and should not have allowed the moment to progress. Kaitlyn insisted he had not taken advantage of her. She had initiated the bargain, the touching, and the truth.

Her consent did not erase Cole’s fear of hurting her. He had wanted Kaitlyn when desire seemed temporary and containable. Knowing how much the experience might mean made the consequences permanent.

“Ryan’s little sister,” he muttered, condemning himself. Kaitlyn flinched. The phrase erased her name and reduced her choice to a betrayal between men.

She told him she was not a child. Cole agreed, but agreement did not quiet the protective instinct built over years. The girl on the backyard swing remained inseparable from the woman before him.

He proposed that they forget the moment ever happened. To Cole, the suggestion was sacrifice. To Kaitlyn, it transformed vulnerability into humiliation.

She asked whether her lack of experience disgusted him. Cole should have denied it immediately, but guilt stole his ability to explain. His hesitation answered in the cruelest possible way.

He apologized again and moved toward the door. Kaitlyn called after him, begging him to wait. Cole did not trust himself to turn around and left before resolve collapsed.

Alone, Kaitlyn stared at the space where he had stood. Her disordered clothes felt like evidence of a mistake she had not believed was one. She wished she had kept the truth hidden.

Cole returned home with the same wound viewed from the opposite side. He knew Kaitlyn had mistaken fear for rejection. He also knew returning to explain might place them exactly where they stopped.

In his room, he stated the rule aloud: he could not take his best friend’s little sister’s virginity. The sentence sounded righteous until he remembered Kaitlyn had never asked Ryan to decide for her.

Cole admitted he liked her far more than was safe. This was not passing attraction or gratitude after rescuing her. Every attempt to step away had strengthened the feeling.

That was precisely why he believed distance was necessary. If he continued, there would be no casual ending and no painless return to friendship. Ryan might lose his best friend, and Kaitlyn might lose someone she trusted.

He resolved to avoid her. The plan was cowardly, but it offered a structure he understood: separate schedules, professional classroom behavior, and closed doors at home. Restraint would become protection.

Kaitlyn reached the opposite conclusion. Cole would never see her as a woman because her brother’s shadow would always stand between them. She hated herself for hoping two kisses meant otherwise.

Neither slept. A wall separated their rooms, thin enough that each heard the other moving. Both wanted to cross the hallway, and neither did.

By morning, Cole’s decision had hardened. Starting now, he would avoid Kaitlyn Sinclair at all costs. He believed absence would save them—without realizing it was about to convince her that she had never been wanted.
