How to Tame a Silver Fox – Episode 55

Chris carried the first suitcase downstairs before Harper found her voice. The house had felt invaded when he moved in; now the sight of him leaving made every room seem too large.

“You said you weren’t walking away,” she reminded him.

“I’m moving out.” He set the case near the entrance. “Those aren’t the same thing.”

Harper heard the distinction but not the reason. His departure followed the cleared charges, the board victory, and their first real date. It looked like retreat at the exact moment danger stopped forcing them together.

Chris explained that Mark had sent him to live there as a protector. Staying in the guest room while dating Harper preserved the imbalance they had spent weeks fighting.

“I want to knock on your door because you invited me,” he said. “Not because your father gave me a key.”

The answer eased one fear and awakened another. Without crisis, Harper would have to learn whether their relationship could survive ordinary disappointment, separate schedules, and choices that were not matters of life or death.

“Where are you going?” she asked.

“The apartment above the club.” Chris handed her the house key. He had replaced every lock damaged during the attack and removed his access from the security system.

Harper closed her fingers around the key. The gesture gave back control he once assumed without asking.

“What happens after the hearing?” she said.

“I take you on a second date, if you still want one.” His tone held confidence, but she recognized vulnerability beneath it.

Harper moved closer. “And if I don’t?”

“Then I respect the answer.” Chris’s gaze settled on her mouth. “I won’t like it.”

She kissed him against the front door, making her response impossible to misunderstand. The contact deepened until the suitcase tipped over beside them.

Chris pulled back with visible effort. “This is not helping me establish healthy boundaries.”

“You’re the one who taught me to challenge bad rules.” Harper smiled and straightened his collar.

He left before either of them changed the plan. Harper watched his vehicle disappear, surprised that choosing separation could feel more committed than forced proximity.

Upstairs, she found a final note on the guest-room desk. Chris had listed emergency numbers, repair contacts, and instructions for the alarm, ending with one handwritten sentence: Call me even when it isn’t an emergency.

Harper reached for her phone, but an email from Yale appeared first. Due to the scandal surrounding the foundation and her public relationship with a university donor, her graduation eligibility had been placed under formal review.
