How to Tame a Silver Fox â Episode 53
Caldwellâs threat reached the press before the board meeting ended. Headlines claimed Harper had used inherited power to protect her fatherâs indicted partner, while none mentioned the personal clause she had rejected.
Harper expected the attack. What surprised her was how little it changed her decision. Public approval had once mattered enough to make her invite strangers into her home; now she could recognize attention without surrendering to it.
Chris offered to resign immediately and remove the conflict. Harper stopped him from treating self-erasure as the only honorable response.
âResign if it protects the investigation,â she said. âNot because Caldwell says loving me makes you guilty.â
Mark convened an emergency board session with independent counsel. The trust veto remained valid, but Harperâs vote would be reviewed for conflict unless she could establish Caldwellâs financial interest.
Christinaâs records showed the consulting payments, yet Sebastianâs company had routed them through three intermediaries. They suggested corruption without proving Caldwell knew the source.
Maria found a more direct connection. The photograph of Harper and Chris used in Crossâs scandal campaign had been uploaded from an account registered to Caldwellâs law firm.
The account logs required a court order, which would take days. The board planned to vote again in six hours.
Harper remembered Caldwell closing the agreement when she noticed Carolineâs footnote. He had carried a physical folder prepared before the board authorized negotiations.
âHe knew the trust terms,â she said. âIf his copy contains notes about bypassing the veto, it proves planning.â
Chris refused to steal privileged documents. Instead, he suggested forcing Caldwell to disclose the folder during the conflict hearing.
Harper appeared before the directors with no attempt to hide her relationship. She stated that Chris had not asked for the veto and had offered to surrender his shares without the personal clause.
Caldwell accused her of rehearsing the statement with him. Harper requested production of the handwritten notes visible in the folder he carried the previous night.
Independent counsel ordered Caldwell to submit the pages. He claimed they concerned unrelated clients and reached to remove them.
One sheet fell onto the conference table. Mark recognized Crossâs initials beside a payment schedule and a note reading, Use H.R. relationship clause as pressure.
Caldwell tried to leave. Two investigators waiting outside the room stopped him while counsel secured the folder.
The directors suspended him and postponed the transfer vote. Chris remained under review, but the board could no longer trade its support for control.
Outside the meeting, Harper allowed herself one breath of relief. Chris stood beside her without claiming the victory.
âYou saved the company,â he said.
âNo,â Harper replied as investigators opened Caldwellâs files. âMom saved it. I finally listenedâand the first document they found was an order to destroy evidence inside your nightclub.â
