How to Tame a Silver Fox – Episode 35
Caroline’s warning followed Harper back to the safe apartment. Chris sat across the room while technicians copied the drive, close enough to protect her and distant enough to respect the thoughts she had not shared.
Harper reread the letter until the words lost shape. Her mother had written it years before attraction complicated every look between them, yet the distinction between protection and love felt painfully current.
Chris noticed the change in her. “What else did Caroline write?”
“That you kept your promise.” Harper folded the letter before he could see the final line. “She knew you’d stay near the family.”
He did not deny it. After Caroline’s death, Chris had promised Mark he would protect Harper whenever she needed him. The promise explained his immediate response in the rain, his move into her house, and every boundary he crossed in the name of safety.
“So this was always an assignment,” Harper said. She hated how young the question made her feel.
Chris crossed the room but stopped before reaching her. “At the beginning, yes. Mark called, and I came because I owed him.”
“And now?” She wanted an answer he had not been ordered to give.
The technician interrupted before Chris could respond. Caroline’s drive contained financial records, witness statements, and encrypted video files. One active transfer showed Sloane moving money through a foundation gala scheduled in two days.
Evan believed the gala would be Sloane’s final opportunity to erase the paper trail before federal agents froze the accounts. Exposing the transfer publicly could force him into the open.
Mark joined by secure video from the hospital. He wanted Harper placed under guard outside the city until the operation ended. Chris refused before she had to.
“She decides,” he said. The words that once surprised Mark now sounded like a principle Chris intended to keep.
Harper chose to help decrypt her mother’s files. The decision was hers, but doubt remained: Chris could respect her autonomy and still see her only as the daughter of a promise.
Hours later, the others left to coordinate with investigators. Harper found Chris alone on the balcony, watching the city while the silver in his hair caught the light.
She handed him Caroline’s full letter. Chris read the warning twice, understanding at last why she had withdrawn.
“Your mother was right,” he said. The answer cut before he continued. “Protection isn’t love. Obligation isn’t desire. That’s why I’ve spent every day trying not to cross this line.”
Harper’s pulse quickened, but she held her ground. “Trying not to want me doesn’t tell me whether you do.”
Chris closed the distance between them. “I want you enough to lose your father, my oldest friend, and every excuse I’ve used to stay in control.”
His hand rose to her face, then paused, leaving the choice where it belonged. Harper leaned into his palm.
Before their lips met, the decrypted drive displayed a video timestamped the night Caroline died. In the final frame, Mark climbed out of her car minutes before the fatal crash.
