Hillbilly Girlie Marries a Billionaire – Episode 22
The estate garden glittered beneath hundreds of warm lights. Lucas claimed the preparations were for a charity dinner, but Emily recognized nervousness beneath his composure. He checked his pocket too often and corrected the musicians twice, behavior no ordinary corporate event had ever inspired.
Her mother arrived in a wheelchair accompanied by a hospital nurse. Emily embraced her carefully, overwhelmed by the sight of improved color in her face. Lucas greeted Mrs. Davis with genuine respect and knelt so they could speak at eye level.
Mrs. Davis thanked him for paying the hospital bills. Lucas replied that Emily had saved him before he understood what he needed saving from. He did not mean the stolen wallet. Emily heard the deeper confession and looked away before emotion ruined the makeup the staff had spent an hour applying.
Grandfather Anderson welcomed Mrs. Davis as family. Noah behaved charmingly and, for once, made no attempt to provoke Lucas. Even Victoria’s empty place at the table felt less like victory than a reminder that peace had been purchased through painful boundaries.
After dinner, Lucas led Emily toward the lit trees. Photographs from their brief marriage hung along a path: the registry certificate, her first gown, the ridiculous stuffed rabbit, and a candid image of her laughing over the honey cake. Their history was short, yet it already looked like a life.
Lucas admitted that he had prepared speeches for boardrooms, lawsuits, and hostile investors, but every proposal sentence sounded false. Emily told him to stop performing and speak as the man who once caught a wallet with corn flying past his head.
He laughed and forgot the memorized words. He said he had noticed her courage first, her honesty second, and her kindness last because it had taken him longest to understand how rare it was. She had entered his life as a practical solution and become the reason he wanted a home rather than an empire.
Lucas lowered himself to one knee. The garden fell silent around them. Emily’s mother covered her mouth, while Grandfather Anderson openly wiped his eyes and pretended the evening air had irritated them.
“Emily Davis Anderson,” Lucas began, “will you marry me again—this time without a deadline, payment, or exit clause?” He opened a box containing the ring from his design. A tiny golden corn leaf curved around the diamond, joining her old world to his.
Emily’s answer rose with tears. Before she could speak, the garden doors burst open. Sophie entered wearing a white dress beneath an unfastened coat, one hand protectively covering the slight curve of her abdomen.
Victoria followed despite the ban from the estate. She claimed an emergency concerning the Anderson bloodline overruled Grandfather’s punishment. Security hesitated because she carried medical documents bearing the family clinic’s seal.
Sophie asked Lucas to stand. He remained beside Emily and told her she had ten seconds to explain the intrusion. Sophie held up an ultrasound image and announced that she was pregnant.
The news stunned the gathering, but Lucas’s expression remained cold. He asked why her pregnancy concerned him. Sophie’s lips trembled with well-rehearsed pain. “Because the baby is yours.”
Emily felt the garden tilt. Her rational mind remembered Lucas’s certainty, Sophie’s schemes, and the clinic photograph no one knew existed. Her body heard only the accusation and the fragile future attached to it.
Lucas denied ever touching Sophie. She reminded him of an industry gala shortly before he met Emily, when he had been drinking after a board victory. Sophie claimed he entered a private room with her and remembered nothing the next morning.
Lucas recalled the gala but not the event she described. Adam had driven him home before midnight. Sophie presented a clinic report identifying Lucas as the genetic father, explaining that she had tested fetal DNA against a sample stored during an Anderson health screening.
Victoria embraced Sophie and declared the unborn child the family’s first legitimate heir. Grandfather Anderson demanded independent testing. Sophie agreed instantly, confident that the stolen sample would match.
Emily looked at Lucas. He crossed the distance between them and said he did not believe Sophie, but a child could not be dismissed until the evidence was examined. His honesty hurt less than a comforting lie would have.
Sophie doubled over, crying that the stress was harming the baby. Victoria ordered a room prepared at the estate so she could be monitored. Lucas refused, but Grandfather Anderson reluctantly allowed a temporary stay until the independent test.
The proposal ring remained open in Lucas’s hand. Emily had never given her answer. Sophie looked at it from Victoria’s arms and smiled where no one else could see—because one unborn child had accomplished what every contract, threat, and humiliation had failed to do: stop Lucas before Emily said yes.
