Falling for My Ex’s Mafia Dad — Episode 77

Fay studied the burning pages and noticed the ink did not change color in the flame. The original ledger used iron-gall ink that darkened under heat. Sergei was destroying another replica.

The twelve tracking signals were decoys designed to scatter investigators. Ivan had anticipated the trick and swallowed a medical transmitter before entering the warehouse. His real location remained stable beneath the false map.

State officers breached through the roof while Daniel blocked the loading exit. Sergei dragged Ivan toward the water, firing blindly behind him.

Ivan broke free despite a dislocated shoulder. Officers arrested Sergei, but a courier escaped by boat carrying the metal case that likely contained the real ledger.

Coast patrol intercepted the boat near the harbor mouth. Inside the case they found only blank accounting books and a phone connected to Lorenzo’s hospital room.

The real ledger had never left Lorenzo’s control. He orchestrated Sergei’s theft to make investigators chase the syndicate while his attorney moved the evidence elsewhere.

The attorney, confronted with the deception, revealed a safe-deposit number. Lorenzo placed the ledger under Fay’s legal name, ensuring only she could retrieve it without a court battle.

The arrangement was another trap. If Fay accessed the box, prosecutors could claim she possessed and concealed criminal records. If she refused, Kent remained detained under the forged copy.

Mara obtained a judicial order for supervised opening. Fay entered the vault with a magistrate, forensic accountant, and cameras documenting every movement.

The box contained the ledger, Victoria’s missing legal documents, and a letter addressed to Fay. Lorenzo wrote that truth belonged to whoever controlled when it appeared.

Forensic review began immediately. Watermarks, aging, and handwriting confirmed the ledger’s authenticity. Digital comparison identified thirty-seven altered entries in the prosecution copy.

Several genuine entries still implicated Kent in bribery, extortion, and violent conspiracy. The forged homicide and Grant-murder charges, however, collapsed under comparison.

Mara filed for dismissal of the tainted counts and renewed bail on the remaining charges. Prosecutors could no longer argue the original ledger was missing.

Fay told Kent the result during a privileged call. He did not celebrate. The genuine entries carried names of people harmed by his orders.

He instructed Mara to explore restitution funded by assets unrelated to the clinic or Daniel’s trust. Fay noted that accountability had moved from principle to money he would actually surrender.

The court scheduled a new hearing in three days. Kent might receive conditional release while negotiating pleas on the genuine offenses.

Ivan underwent treatment under guard. He had helped recover the ledger, but his earlier affidavit still contributed to Kent’s arrest. He asked Fay whether one good act ever balanced betrayal.

She said accountability was not a scale that returned to zero. He could build a different life without demanding that injured people certify him as redeemed.

Ivan accepted the answer. He signed a complete recantation and surrendered recordings proving Grant ordered the fabricated statements.

Before Mara could file them, prosecutors announced Grant had died in custody from an apparent suicide—taking the official explanation for the conspiracy with him.
