Falling for My Ex’s Mafia Dad — Episode 57

Fay ended the embrace first. Kent released her immediately, but the warmth remained around her like evidence. They had not kissed, yet both understood that comfort could become intimacy more quickly than hunger.

Daniel saw them return from the garden together. He looked at Fay’s face, then Kent’s, and asked whether the agreement had been broken. Fay answered that they had held each other and nothing more. She refused to minimize the intimacy simply because it lacked a kiss. Emotional exceptions had been the route by which their first promise failed, and Daniel deserved the full meaning rather than a technical defense.

He considered the distinction. The boundary prohibited physical contact because secrecy had already harmed him, but grief was not a loophole they had discussed. Daniel chose not to call the embrace betrayal, though he warned that unspoken exceptions would eventually consume every rule.

Fay agreed. They revised the remaining seven days: no private physical contact, including comfort, unless Daniel knew beforehand. The formality felt awkward, but relationships built inside deception required more clarity than ordinary affection.

Kent accepted without argument. He then surprised Daniel by asking how Colin was coping with the surveillance discovery. The microphone in Daniel’s room had captured conversations intimate enough to destroy both men if leaked.

Daniel said Colin wanted to leave the estate. Safety had become another word for being recorded, watched, and discussed. Kent offered them a property chosen by Colin, with security they could dismiss and ownership transferred out of Lippert control.

The offer carried no requirement that Daniel remain heir. For the first time, Kent acknowledged his son might build a household beyond the empire. He also promised the deed would contain no reversion clause or hidden Lippert company ownership. Daniel could not answer immediately. Freedom offered without punishment was so unfamiliar that he searched the gift for a trap even while wanting to believe it.

Meanwhile, Grant’s devices continued transmitting manufactured normality. Staff read recipes near one microphone and discussed harmless schedules near another. The strategy bought time while Mara sought warrants against the task force.

Ivan remained in the infirmary under guard. Federal lawyers demanded his release, but he invoked his right to counsel and requested protective status through Mara. Choosing legal uncertainty over Grant’s protection marked the first irreversible break with his handler.

He surrendered an access code to a cloud archive. The files documented payments between Grant, Rafe, and several Alden companies, but none directly connected Lorenzo to Elise’s murder. Grant had compartmentalized every crime.

One audio file captured Lorenzo offering Fay’s courtship to Ivan before the engagement scandal. He discussed her appearance, education, and symbolic value beside shipping tonnage and customs contacts. Her father had negotiated her future weeks before publicly pretending to defend her reputation. Hearing herself described as “adaptable” made Fay understand that Lorenzo interpreted every act of survival as evidence she could endure further use.

Fay listened once and refused a second replay. Blood might explain Lorenzo’s interest, but it did not create love. He valued her most when other men competed for possession. The realization freed her from the exhausting hope that one perfect conversation could awaken the father she wanted. Whatever affection Lorenzo felt had always been subordinate to power.

She called him from the screened room and asked to meet. Lorenzo proposed his estate; Fay selected the clinic boardroom and required Mara’s presence. He accused Kent of teaching her distrust.

“You taught me,” Fay said. The answer silenced him long enough to expose how much he understood. They scheduled the confrontation for the following morning.

Kent wanted to attend. Fay refused because Lorenzo would turn the meeting into a rivalry between fathers and lovers. She needed to speak as a daughter deciding what relationship, if any, remained.

Daniel offered to accompany her as family. Fay accepted. Their false romance was ending, but their chosen bond had survived lies, attraction, and danger. He had become the brother neither bloodline had given her.

Before dawn, Colin arrived with a suitcase. He had chosen a small apartment near the university and intended to move that day. Daniel looked torn between going with him and standing beside Fay.

Fay told him to help Colin. She could face Lorenzo with Mara and independent security. Daniel protested that leaving felt like abandonment until Colin quietly said Fay was giving him permission to choose their shared life. Protecting chosen family sometimes meant trusting them to handle a battle without you. Daniel took Colin’s hand and finally chose the future waiting outside the estate.

Daniel embraced her, then followed Colin. Kent watched his son leave the estate without demanding a return date. Pride and grief crossed his face in equal measure.

As their car disappeared, a courier delivered a legal notice to the gate. Lorenzo had petitioned the court to declare Fay financially incompetent, claiming coercive control by Kent made her unable to manage the clinic or her inheritance.
