Salt Kiss ā Episode 06
The office settled into silence after the attackers fled. Tristan remained alert, unwilling to let the absence of immediate danger convince him that the threat had ended. Mark, however, watched him with the calm satisfaction of a man whose judgment had just been confirmed.
Tristan knew this was the moment to secure the job, but he refused to do it without boundaries. He had returned out of necessity and protected Mark out of instinct. Neither act granted the billionaire permission to repeat what had happened during their disastrous first meeting.
āOkay, Mr. Trevena.ā Tristan forced his voice into a professional register. āI can handle your job, sir.ā The title felt safer than Markās preferred language of masters and obedience. It belonged to employment, not ownership.
Mark waited, evidently hearing the condition in Tristanās tone before it was spoken. His patience made the room feel like another negotiation he already expected to win.
āBut whatever sort of twisted, sick sexual shit you have going on here, I want no part in it.ā Tristan did not soften the words. He needed Mark to understand that saving his life had not changed Tristanās opinion of the club or its rituals.
He stood straighter beneath Markās scrutiny. āIām a soldier, and Iām straight.ā The declaration was meant to close the subject completely. It drew a faint, unreadable smile from Mark instead.
āIām sure you are, Tristan.ā Hearing his first name in Markās voice felt more intimate than it should have. There was no direct challenge in the answer, only enough skepticism to make Tristan defensive.
Mark stepped closer but respected the space between them. āI donāt need you to participate.ā Relief came too quickly, and Tristan distrusted it at once. Mark was not a man who conceded without replacing one demand with another.
āBut I will need you to witness it,ā Mark continued. āAll of it.ā The words carried the same uncompromising certainty as his earlier command to kneel. If Tristan guarded him inside the club, looking away would not be an option.
Tristan considered the practical truth behind the demand. A bodyguard who did not understand the environment could mistake consent for danger or fail to recognize a genuine threat. The attackers had already proved that Markās business attracted risks extending far beyond private pleasure.
āIām willing to put the job back on the table,ā Mark said, āif youāre willing to at least try to understand my world.ā He did not ask Tristan to approve. That distinction mattered, even if Tristan disliked how reasonable it sounded.
Trying to understand was not surrender. Tristan repeated that silently, separating observation from participation, duty from desire. He could learn rules without accepting them as his own. Soldiers studied hostile territory all the time.
āDo you think you can do that?ā Mark asked. The question was quieter than an order, yet it carried greater weight because the choice appeared to belong to Tristan.
Images of the battlefield pressed at the edge of his mind: the grenade, the gunshot, his fatherās promise to send him back. Compared with those memories, walking through an expensive club and witnessing consensual acts should have been simple.
āI can, sir.ā Tristan gave the answer firmly. Whatever Mark showed him, he would remain a professional. He would watch, learn, and protect without allowing the billionaireās world to change him.
āThen let me show you your new home.ā Mark turned toward the inner doors. Tristan followed, unsettled by the word home. He had agreed to become a live-in bodyguard, but he had not considered what it meant to place every hour of his life inside Markās territory.
The doors opened onto a space of dark elegance, expensive privacy, and carefully controlled sensation. Music pulsed beneath low conversation. Every glance seemed charged with meanings Tristan did not yet understand, and every person inside appeared to recognize Mark as the center of the room.
āWelcome to the Lyonesse,ā Mark said. āWashingtonās most exclusive BDSM club.ā Tristan crossed the threshold beside him, carrying a soldierās discipline like armor. For the first time, he wondered whether the greatest threat in this place would come from an attackerāor from everything Mark expected him to discover about himself.
