How to Tame a Silver Fox – Episode 41

Mark’s demand settled over the hospital room like a verdict. Harper kept hold of Chris’s hand, refusing to let either man mistake silence for surrender. After everything she had survived, she would not allow love to become another decision made without her.

“If Chris walks away because you ordered him to, that won’t prove he loves me,” she said. “It will prove neither of you believes I can choose for myself.”

Mark looked exhausted rather than convinced. The bandage across his shoulder made him seem vulnerable, but fatherhood still gave him the confidence to speak as though fear were authority.

“You met him again days ago,” Mark argued. “You don’t know the life he has lived or what he becomes when someone threatens what belongs to him.”

Harper heard the warning hidden in the wording. “I don’t belong to him. I don’t belong to you either.”

Chris released her hand. The loss of contact hurt, but when he spoke, he addressed Harper rather than Mark. “Your father is right about one thing. There are parts of my past you haven’t heard.”

“Then tell me.” She refused to let uncertainty do the work of truth.

Chris admitted that before he turned against Sloane, he had collected debts and removed problems from clubs controlled by the organization. He had never trafficked drugs, but he had protected men who did until Caroline’s investigation forced him to see the whole machine.

Mark believed those years proved Chris could never offer Harper an ordinary life. Chris did not challenge the judgment. He had built his present from the consequences of that past.

Harper studied him, searching for excuses and finding none. “Did you lie to me about any of that?”

“I avoided telling you.” Chris’s honesty was uncomfortable but complete. “That was still a choice.”

She turned to Mark. “He just admitted more in one minute than you did in twelve years.” Her father flinched, and regret briefly displaced anger.

Mark insisted he was trying to keep her from confusing danger with devotion. Harper understood the fear because she had once confused Bryan’s control with concern. Chris, however, had learned to stop when she said no.

“I won’t disappear,” Chris said. “But I won’t ask Harper for promises while the case is active and every emotion is tied to survival.”

The compromise sounded mature, yet Harper heard distance inside it. “You’re postponing us until you feel less guilty.”

“I’m giving you time to know the man you kissed.” His voice softened. “Not the man who rescued you, and not the man your father fears.”

Harper wanted to argue, but choice required information, and she had demanded both. “Fine. No secret relationship. No pretending the kiss meant nothing either.”

Chris agreed. Mark did not, though his silence suggested he recognized that issuing another command would only push Harper farther away.

A nurse entered with a sealed evidence envelope recovered from Caroline’s drive. Inside was a photograph of the federal contact who had controlled Evan’s disappearance.

Mark identified him immediately. “Daniel Cross,” he said. “He’s the agent who told me Caroline’s case was closed—and he was standing outside this room an hour ago.”
