Salt Kiss – Episode 59
With Vale imprisoned and Isolde gone, the Lyonesse felt too quiet. Tristan rebuilt security while Mark returned to managing the club, each respecting the new boundary between employment and desire.
Respect did not make the distance easier.
Mark no longer issued private commands. Tristan no longer entered his office without a security reason. Both waited for the other to choose what came next.
The final federal report arrived a week later. Vale’s organization had been dismantled, the compromised employees charged, and the immediate threat closed.
Ricker Thomas was placed under investigation for unauthorized intelligence activity. He requested one last meeting with Tristan.
“You owe him nothing,” Mark said.
“I know. That is why I can go.”
Before leaving, Tristan paused at the office door. “When I come back, I want to discuss us.”
Hope broke through Mark’s reserve. “I’ll be here.”
Tristan met his father outside military headquarters, neutral ground chosen without deference.
Ricker blamed Mark for the investigation, Isolde for scandal, and Tristan for allowing desire to destroy the Thomas legacy.
“The legacy destroyed itself when it valued obedience more than people,” Tristan replied.
His father offered to make the inquiry disappear if Tristan denied the relationship and returned to service.
For years, that offer would have sounded like rescue. Now it sounded like another cage.
“I am not returning to your war.”
Ricker removed him from the family inheritance and declared their relationship finished.
Tristan walked away grieving the father he had never truly had, but the grief no longer controlled his direction.
Outside the gates, Isolde waited beside her car. “I thought you might need someone who understands leaving a family behind.”
