The Virgin’s Bucket List – Episode 69

The Maple Hill account belonged to the school media lab rather than an individual. Dozens of students and staff had used it during the months before graduation. Identifying the downloader required old access logs.

Jeremy searched backups with district approval. The Episode 82 file had been copied on the same day Alyssa confessed to working for Grant. Suspicion naturally returned to her.

Alyssa denied taking it and offered every device for examination. She understood why no one accepted her word alone. Trust required evidence, especially after her history.

Her devices contained no copy. Security footage showed Jean using the media lab during the relevant hour. Jean had confessed once before, but fear might have drawn her back into another scheme.

Lindsay contacted her without accusation. Jean admitted downloading a file labeled “final leverage” from Grant’s message archive. She never opened it and later transferred the folder to the principal as part of her confession.

The principal’s evidence drive had gone missing during the Northstar investigation. District records showed Nora Bell signed it out while posing as a federal contractor. Nora had never mentioned Episode 82.

Investigators questioned Nora. She admitted taking the drive under Reed’s instruction but claimed she destroyed it after copying financial records. Her cooperation agreement now faced review.

Lindsay asked why a data system built around endless engagement would create a final episode. Mina believed Episode 82 was never intended for viewers. It modeled the conclusion most likely to make subjects surrender control voluntarily.

For Wayne, that might mean abandoning football. For Lindsay, it might mean giving up reporting. The file could identify a pressure neither had yet faced.

They decided not to search obsessively for the content. Knowing every planned attack could become another form of obedience. Investigators would follow the drive, while Lindsay and Wayne continued their lives.

Mike supported the decision but strengthened school archive security. He had learned that calm did not mean neglect. Protective action could coexist with refusing panic.

Jamie turned eighteen and assumed control of his trust share. He placed most funds in an independently managed education account and donated a portion to counseling access for adopted teenagers.

He invited Wayne, Evelyn, Lindsay, and Mara’s closest friends to a small dinner. Daniel was not included, but Jamie sent him a letter acknowledging progress. Boundaries and compassion existed together.

During dinner, Wayne announced he had earned the starting quarterback position. Lindsay shared that her community-garden article would be published by a regional newspaper. Their victories belonged to different worlds and received equal celebration.

Evelyn gave both sons copies of a family photograph without hidden clues or secret compartments. It was simply a memory they could keep or discard. Jamie placed his beside Mara’s picture.

The evening convinced Lindsay that not every object needed to launch an investigation. Sometimes a photograph could remain only a photograph. She allowed herself to enjoy that simplicity.

As guests departed, Alyssa arrived unexpectedly with a sealed evidence bag. Nora had mailed it to her before questioning, perhaps expecting Alyssa to understand the value of leverage.

Inside was the missing school drive and a handwritten warning: Episode 82 does not predict their ending. It contains Catherine Johnson’s chosen ending for them.
