The Virgin’s Bucket List – Episode 47
Wayne’s suspension was administrative rather than disciplinary, but training stopped immediately. He had done nothing wrong, yet the system designed to evaluate him now treated him as contaminated evidence.
Lindsay blamed herself for exposing the scandal before understanding every consequence. Wayne refused that burden. Northstar created the risk; reporting it merely revealed who had already been endangered.
He admitted he was still angry. Not at Lindsay, but at institutions that praised courage until truth became inconvenient. His scholarship remained valid on paper while his place on the field disappeared.
Mr. Russell advised patience. Independent reviewers needed to determine whether Northstar data influenced recruitment, grades, or medical clearance. Wayne’s record was strong, but exceptions would undermine the process.
Wayne returned to Maple Hill for the review. Lindsay wanted to go with him, yet leaving the suspended program might look like abandonment of the other student reporters. Their responsibilities pulled them in opposite directions.
At the airport, Wayne told her not to choose him out of guilt. Lindsay heard echoes of their college conversations and promised to remain at the university until the investigation stabilized. Distance was painful, not evidence of failing love.
Alyssa observed their goodbye without comment. After Wayne left, she admitted she once believed possessing someone’s attention proved superiority. Watching Lindsay let him leave showed a kind of security she had never understood.
The program director offered students a choice: withdraw with full refunds or stay while an independent faculty team redesigned the course. Most stayed. Their reporting had become the education they came to receive.
Elena resigned as mentor before the university could decide her fate. In a letter to the class, she acknowledged that protecting evidence did not excuse manipulating students. She offered her archive without conditions.
Lindsay visited her before departure. She played the remainder of Catherine’s recording, which contained a message about Lindsay’s future. Catherine hoped her daughter would learn that truth without compassion could become another weapon.
The words forced Lindsay to examine how relentlessly she pursued answers. She had protected sources, but she also treated rest as weakness and relationships as problems to solve. Journalism could consume her as football once consumed Mike.
She called Wayne and asked about his review without immediately discussing the investigation. He admitted feeling lost away from practice. They spoke as two frightened young adults rather than hero and protector.
Wayne’s teammates submitted statements that his recruitment predated any Northstar profile. Medical staff confirmed he had not received special clearance. His eligibility appeared likely to return.
Jamie faced a different consequence. A college-preparation service denied his application after receiving a Northstar risk score tied to counseling. The scandal had followed him despite his efforts to remain private.
Alyssa offered to help him appeal using her own documented profile. Jamie distrusted her, but Lindsay confirmed Alyssa understood the system better than anyone. He agreed to communicate through Wayne.
Working together, they demonstrated that both scores relied on stolen and misleading data. The service reversed its decision and suspended its Northstar contract. Jamie thanked Alyssa without forgiving her earlier actions.
That limited gratitude meant more to Alyssa than easy absolution. She began to understand that change was measured by repeated choices made without applause.
Just as Wayne’s eligibility review neared completion, investigators found a Northstar payment to Mike Johnson labeled “athlete placement fee.” The old accusation returned with new documentation—and Wayne was summoned to testify against Lindsay’s father.
