The Virgin’s Bucket List – Episode 44

The evidence appeared to implicate Elena, but Lindsay had learned not to confuse an account name with a person. Northstar’s administrators could impersonate users, and Elena’s credentials might have been stolen through the same system.

Campus investigators seized her university devices. Elena cooperated and remained on leave. She admitted that secrecy made her an easy suspect, another consequence of believing transparency would endanger the mission.

Jeremy compared login times with Elena’s archived emails. The Northstar account remained active during periods when she was lecturing on camera or visiting Victor. Someone had maintained a digital copy of her identity for months.

Alyssa remembered that Grant’s altered packet came through an administrator he appointed. That employee, Dean Marcus Reed, also supervised the journalism program’s funding. His office controlled dorm assignments, faculty credentials, and student analytics.

Lindsay requested an interview rather than accusing him. Dean Reed welcomed both students with practiced concern. He called Northstar a harmless retention tool designed to identify students who needed support.

When Lindsay asked about location tracking, Reed claimed technical misunderstanding. Alyssa placed her application number on his desk and asked why the system categorized her as “highly influenceable through status restoration.”

The dean’s composure slipped. He said predictive labels were generated automatically and never used for admissions. Lindsay asked why Grant’s messages employed the exact same pressure point.

Reed ended the interview and ordered them to leave. As they crossed the outer office, Lindsay noticed Catherine’s original photograph pinned behind the assistant’s desk. The image was not part of any public file.

The assistant, Nora Bell, removed it quickly. She claimed Elena had distributed copies years earlier. Alyssa recognized Nora’s silver bracelet as identical to Elena’s, though closer inspection revealed it was a university donor gift.

Back at the dorm, they mapped everyone who received the bracelet. Grant had presented it to senior administrators and favored staff at a private gala. The cropped wrist in the photograph could belong to Nora, Reed, or dozens of others.

Wayne called with difficult news. His athletic department used Northstar for player monitoring, and coaches had received reports summarizing private searches about injuries and transfers. Some athletes might have signed away data rights without understanding.

He wanted to speak publicly. Lindsay urged him first to gather consent from teammates whose information could be exposed. Their earlier conflicts had taught both of them that good intentions did not grant ownership of someone else’s story.

Wayne organized a private meeting with players and an independent student advocate. Most agreed to request their records. The decision expanded the investigation beyond Lindsay’s family.

Alyssa drafted a first-person account of how targeted messages exploited her desire to recover social status. She did not excuse her actions. She explained how surveillance made manipulation more efficient.

Lindsay edited the piece with unusual care. Alyssa’s honesty could help others, but publication would permanently attach her name to every mistake. Alyssa chose to proceed.

Their program peers voted to publish a joint investigation through an independent platform. Students divided reporting tasks, protected sensitive records, and created a verification team. The project became larger than any one rivalry.

Before release, Nora Bell contacted Lindsay privately. She said Dean Reed ordered the surveillance and used Elena’s credentials, but Grant had not been the only client buying student profiles.

Nora offered proof on one condition: Alyssa’s essay must be removed. She claimed Alyssa was not merely targeted by Northstar—she had volunteered as a student informant during her final semester at Maple Hill.
