The Virgin’s Bucket List – Episode 36

The cease-and-desist letter demanded that Lindsay remove the investigation within two hours. Grant’s attorneys accused her of defamation, invasion of privacy, and intentional damage to the university. The language was designed to frighten an eighteen-year-old into silence.

Mike wanted the article taken down until their attorney reviewed it. Lindsay understood his fear, but removing verified evidence would allow Grant to claim the story had been false. She forwarded the letter to counsel and left the article online.

Wayne stayed beside her as the deadline expired. He did not promise that everything would be fine. Instead, he promised that any consequences would belong to all of them, not to Lindsay alone.

Their attorney confirmed that the article cited records accurately and distinguished fact from allegation. Grant could still file a lawsuit, but the cease-and-desist contained no specific factual correction. It was intimidation rather than rebuttal.

The story spread to regional sports reporters. Questions about the altered scholarship packet forced the university to announce an external investigation. Grant temporarily stepped away from the board while denying misconduct.

Mr. Russell called Wayne. The athletic department withdrew the compromised offer and prepared a clean version free of donor waivers. Wayne appreciated the correction but asked to wait until the investigation finished.

Grant appeared on television that afternoon. He described himself as a grandfather trying to protect vulnerable boys from people seeking trust money. He displayed the bank payment to Catherine without mentioning Victor’s ledger.

Lindsay watched comments turn against her again. Evidence required attention, while Grant offered a simple story with a sympathetic face. She learned that publishing truth did not guarantee immediate belief.

Alyssa sent a new screenshot. Grant had instructed her to obtain private footage of Lindsay and Wayne that could discredit the article as revenge. She had never succeeded, but the request established deliberate intent.

Lindsay added the message to the evidence archive rather than the article. Constant updates could make careful reporting look reactive. Her mentor praised the restraint and reminded her that journalism was not winning every hour of public opinion.

Jamie struggled with being called vulnerable by a grandfather he had never met. Grant’s statement reduced him to a secret inheritance and implied others controlled him. With his counselor present, Jamie recorded his own response.

He did not reveal adoption details. He simply stated that no one had exploited him, and he had authorized the investigation of the trust created for him. His measured voice undermined Grant’s claim without surrendering privacy.

Evelyn stood behind the camera but allowed Jamie to speak alone. Wayne recognized how difficult that restraint was for her. Their family was learning to support choices rather than make them for one another.

The response shifted public attention toward the beneficiaries Grant claimed to protect. Reporters began asking why he had inserted a release into Wayne’s scholarship packet if his only purpose was education.

Grant’s attorneys withdrew the demand that Lindsay remove the article but maintained their threat of legal action. It was a partial retreat disguised as strategy. Lindsay finally allowed herself to breathe.

Mike received notice that the district had found no evidence of theft. His coaching authority was restored, though the board required an ethics review of old foundation procedures. He accepted the condition.

At home, Mike told Lindsay he was proud of her. She teased that he had once believed she could only distract important men. He apologized without excuse, acknowledging that she had become the person who forced all of them to focus on what mattered.

Their relief ended when the university investigator called. Victor Hale had suffered a stroke, and Grant’s attorneys now claimed his affidavit was invalid. Without his testimony, the original foundation records might be challenged again.
