The Virgin’s Bucket List – Episode 31

Daniel stood alone inside the storage facility, staring at Catherine’s warning. The letter had been sealed for more than a decade, yet the fear in her handwriting felt immediate. She had underlined one name twice: Grant Adams, Evelyn’s father and Wayne’s grandfather.

Catherine described Grant as a man who treated family like property. He had opposed Evelyn’s relationship with Daniel, financed the custody battle, and used private investigators to keep both sons within reach. According to Catherine, Daniel’s violence was real, but Grant had exploited it to build a larger lie.

Daniel removed a second document from the blue box. It was a copy of a trust established by Wayne’s late grandmother, promising education funds to Wayne and any younger sibling. Grant controlled the trust until both boys turned eighteen.

Wayne had reached that age, and Jamie would follow within months. If the documents were genuine, both brothers were entitled to money no one had ever mentioned. Daniel understood why Catherine believed the danger would return when the boys became adults.

He photographed every page before calling Wayne. The call went unanswered, so Daniel left a message asking for a supervised meeting. He promised not to approach Jamie without permission and said Catherine’s letter changed everything.

At the Johnson house, Wayne listened to the voicemail with Lindsay beside him. He distrusted Daniel’s sudden urgency, especially after years of absence. Lindsay suggested that refusing to listen would leave them dependent on other people’s versions of the truth.

Evelyn recognized Grant’s name immediately. She had not spoken to her father since he forced her to choose between family support and Daniel. When she chose Daniel, Grant promised she would eventually return with nothing.

Mike arranged for the meeting to take place in the school counselor’s office. Jamie agreed to attend only if the counselor remained present and Daniel sat across the room. The boundaries gave him enough control to walk through the door.

Daniel brought copies rather than the original box. He admitted that Catherine’s letter did not excuse the man he had been. Grant might have manipulated events, but Daniel had provided the anger and fear that made manipulation possible.

Jamie asked whether Daniel had ever struck Evelyn. Daniel answered yes. The single word carried more honesty than a polished apology, though it hardened Jamie’s expression.

Wayne wanted to know why Daniel had allowed the world to believe he was dead. Daniel explained that he accepted a protected identity after testifying against Grant’s business partners. He had been told contact would endanger Evelyn and both boys.

Evelyn called the explanation convenient. Daniel agreed. Fear, legal orders, and shame had become excuses long after the original threat faded.

Lindsay studied the trust document. One logo in the corner matched the letterhead on Wayne’s university offer. Grant Adams now chaired the board governing Mr. Russell’s athletic program.

Wayne’s scholarship was not merely a reward for talent. His grandfather had positioned himself inside the institution that seemed ready to shape Wayne’s future. Every opportunity now looked like another hidden arrangement.

Mr. Russell had never mentioned Grant. Mike called him immediately, but the scout said donor records were outside his role and denied knowing Wayne’s family connection. His surprise sounded genuine.

Daniel warned Wayne not to sign anything until an independent attorney reviewed the trust. If Grant controlled the university board, accepting the offer might include waivers affecting Wayne’s inheritance.

Wayne felt the future narrowing around him. Football had always represented freedom, yet family secrets had reached even the field. Lindsay took his hand and reminded him that information could expose a cage before it closed.

As the meeting ended, Wayne received an email from Grant Adams himself. The message contained no greeting, only a private flight reservation and one command: Come alone if you want to know what Catherine Johnson was really hiding.
