The Quarterback’s First Love – Episode 48
The duplicate charm appeared nearly identical until Cameron examined the engraving. One edge bore the initials D.H.; Maddie’s original carried a tiny scratch shaped like a crescent.
The package included a newspaper clipping about Daniel’s arrest during active addiction and a warning that he planned to sell Cameron’s story after the championship.
Cameron’s first instinct was suspicion. Trust with Daniel was new enough that planted doubt found easy ground.
Maddie suggested verification instead of reassurance. They contacted Daniel directly and sent photographs of the package.
He recognized the duplicate. Cameron’s mother had bought two charms before his birth, keeping one and placing the other with their son.
Daniel still possessed his until it disappeared during a burglary years ago. He provided an old photograph showing the initials.
The clipping contained real facts arranged to imply current danger. Someone had again weaponized incomplete truth.
Security traced the delivery to an assistant formerly employed by Linda’s attorney. Linda denied involvement, but investigators discovered payment from a Carter family discretionary account.
Roy had access to the account as well. Cameron confronted him, unwilling to excuse another betrayal through ignorance.
Roy admitted authorizing the payment but claimed Linda described it as private investigation. His pattern remained the same: signing power away, then regretting its use.
Cameron removed Roy from all financial authority connected to his career and charitable trust. Consequences arrived without dramatic anger.
Daniel offered not to attend the championship. Cameron refused to let manipulation decide who occupied the stands.
“Come,” he said. “But understand that one meeting didn’t make everything whole.” Daniel accepted the limited invitation with gratitude.
Maddie wore the genuine charm beneath her uniform. She reminded Cameron that objects could be copied, while shared memory could not.
Championship week filled campus with banners and cameras. Central had not expected a title opportunity before Cameron transferred.
Coach Reynolds kept practices closed. Without Brett on the roster, the locker room settled into a unity once impossible under constant rivalry.
Veronica agreed to testify fully against Linda and Brett without demanding anything from Maddie. Whether motivated by remorse or survival, the truth still mattered.
Her statement connected Linda to the medical leak, false eligibility complaint, and duplicate charm scheme. Prosecutors expanded the case.
The night before kickoff, Maddie and Cameron visited the empty stadium. They stood at the goal line where their reunion had begun with betrayal and a final touchdown.
Cameron asked what would happen if he lost tomorrow. Maddie placed his hand over the charm. “Then you’ll still be Jack when the lights go out.”
