The Quarterback’s First Love – Episode 44
Investigators questioned Veronica for six hours. Brett’s devices contained messages connecting her to the banquet alarm, Campus Clash sabotage, and Linda’s search for medical records.
She continued denying the worst actions. The alarm was supposed to ruin a dress, the oily ball to embarrass a rival, and the records to frighten Maddie away. Intent, she discovered, did not erase consequences.
Central expelled her for misconduct and endangerment. Her father resigned from the booster board to protect his business, refusing to finance another legal rescue.
Veronica blamed Maddie until her attorney read the messages aloud. Each scheme began with jealousy and escalated because she assumed money would prevent limits.
Linda’s kidnapping case strengthened through the same evidence. Her attorney withdrew after learning she concealed relevant communications. Roy Carter cooperated fully.
Maddie attended no hearings she was not required to attend. Recovery meant refusing to organize her life around the people who harmed her.
The housing initiative launch was rescheduled with improved security. Attendance doubled after the auditorium incident, but Maddie rejected attempts to advertise her as a heroic victim.
She spoke about systems instead: emergency grants, confidential counseling, tenant rights, and medical privacy. Personal courage mattered, but students should not need extraordinary bravery to obtain basic safety.
Cameron watched from the back rather than sharing the stage. This project belonged to Maddie and the team she built.
Afterward, the university president offered permanent funding and a paid coordinator position after graduation. Maddie accepted conditional on student oversight.
Coach Reynolds returned Cameron’s focus to football. Playoffs approached, and professional scouts attended every game. The coach warned that trauma could not become an excuse for neglected preparation.
Cameron agreed. He had learned that loving Maddie did not mean abandoning every other responsibility. A future together required both of them to sustain lives beyond crisis.
His shoulder recovered fully, and the offense expanded. Teammates responded to a quarterback who credited them publicly and corrected mistakes privately.
Maddie returned to cheer practice on her own schedule. The squad elected a temporary captain and adopted anti-hazing rules. Leadership no longer belonged to the wealthiest voice.
Her first practice felt unfamiliar without Veronica commanding every formation. Then music began, and Maddie remembered why she had loved dance before the squad became another place to survive.
Cameron watched from the field. Their eyes met, and neither needed to cross the distance. Support could exist without interruption.
Veronica requested a meeting through attorneys to offer testimony against Linda. In exchange, she wanted Maddie to support reduced university sanctions.
Maddie declined the bargain but agreed to hear truthful testimony through formal channels. Forgiveness, if it ever came, would not erase accountability.
That evening, Cameron received a letter from Linda in county detention. She asked him to visit alone and claimed Roy had hidden the most important truth about his adoption.
The final line made his hands go cold: “The Carters did not choose you by chance, Jack. We knew who your biological father was.”
